Kings trade JT, Nik and Landry to Sixers (renamed)

Basically, like others, they are worried about having "assets" later on down the line and "draft picks". They are not worried about winning today.

No worries Hammer, we are heading in the right direction.
You just put assets and draft picks in quotes. These are real and tangible things.

We didn't wake up today and all of a sudden Sac is a free agent magnet. We can't just assume we are going to keep signing free agents today and down the road. Especially when it's never happened.

Then someone suggests we just make trades later on. With what "assets"?

I want to win for a long time. Not for one season. I want a title, not just a playoff spot.

Oh come on! That was a great trade! We dumped Landry, JT, and Stauskas. We took a risk but not even a huge risk.

- So we gave up a draft pick, OOOHHH oh mannnnnn we're done! The Kings had one of the best starting 5 last year before everybody started to get hurt. With WCS and 2-4 more players from FA, I wouldn't be surprised if we made the playoffs next year on talent alone. That means Philly gets a what, 15th pick? There's never been a superstar drafted that low. Then they can swap two future picks. Do you really think they're going to be better then us in two years? And do you think we're going to be terrible in 2 years? Barring injuries, no way man. Plus, we SWAP picks with them, not lose the picks.

Smart man.

How much more talent do you want? How much more talend could you even squeeze (and pay!) onto an NBA team?

That is one of the top 3 most talented teams in the league!
Top 3 in the league? Really? Were the Blazers with Matthews a top 3 team last year? Their roster from top to bottom was better than what we're trying to put together.

We make the playoffs for one year, then what? People aren't seeing the long term ramifications. Cousins will absolutely have to be traded. If not this summer, within 2 years.

Dude, read what I wrote. I'm basically saying its a bad trade to net Matthews. The only way for it to be ok is if we make the playoffs now as a first step and then be able to build from it.

It's going to take bold moves to get out of this rut of less than 30 wins every year. There is some risk involved to be sure but that risk is not tied to the players we just gave up. Stauskas might end up being a solid NBA player but he's not going to be someone we can live without....call it what it was....the wrong draft pick. Never been a great JT fan but I acknowledge what he did bring to the table which is good defense but as soon as we drafted WCS, we instantly got better at that spot...never mind the comparisons to previous rookies and their struggles....WCS is going to make his mark on defense which will transfer quickly to the NBA.

There is some risk with the picks but I'm good with the deal....and I'd feel better like most if we can deliver on the new cap space with some quality signings. If Mathews signs here, we have potentially upgraded that position by a mile....health is a concern. If we sign Rondo, then we also have upgraded our talent base. If we don't get those 2 guys or Monta, then there are a number of lower level moves that can benefit this team but I wouldn't give out the contracts just to do something.

I'd definitely bring back Casspi especially if Gay plays more 4. I wouldn't mind Pat Beverly as his defense is outstanding.....a difference maker on that end. For some of the lower tier FAs, I'd be looking at short smaller contracts to minimize risk.

I'm officially convinced.

Those of you against the trade must secretly have a deep love/connection with Landry, JT, and Stauskas that you are just not being honest about.

You also are secretly planning a 2018, 2019, 2020 NBA Draft Party extravaganza and this trade has just crushed those dreams.

....it's the only explanation.
I'm not against trading them. I don't think it was worth to include the draft picks and Stauskas. I don't pretend to know Stausask's value around the league, but for a team that lacks outside shooting, we traded a player who projects to be a solid outside shooter, perhaps in the mold of JJ Reddik. I would be more on board with this trade if it were done pre-FA period and we had a shot at signing key FAs...but as it stands now, there are few to choose from after the rush.

To the people saying we might get an 8th seed and thats it. Thats what we want! Cousins is the benfactor, he's the one that will take us to the promised land. Hes the guy you can see dominating a 7 game series. Last season the Pelicans got swept in the first round and are pretty much bringing back the same team. Do you think they are not thinking of bigger, better things?
This is exactly how I feel about the move. Let's get Cousins IN the playoffs. Let's see his eyes light up at the prospect of carrying a team when it really counts. He's the kind of player that needs that challenge. A real, tangible challenge.
If we can make the playoffs this year, the cap goes up next year and we can sign one or two more complementaty pieces.

Im not over the moon about this trade, but I want to see what the roster looks like in a month, most importantly see what the team lookd like in November.
We've pushed our chips into the center of the table. It's about time. I know people love looking at the top 5 prospects of 2017, 2018, etc, but it's time to take that next step, and with the boneheaded move made earlier in the year by the FO, they cannot afford to hit that reset button one more time before opening a new arena. We need to be a .500 team next year. At least, and this is the quickest way to get us there. I would rather overspend now where we are limited by a smaller cap. Time will tell if it was the right move, but it was certainly a lower risk move than some are making it out to be. My main concern is moving JT, because he had more value here than people thought.

If we're worried about swapping the #3 pick with the #5 pick with Philadelphia next year, we have bigger issues to deal with. Way bigger.

If someone came along pre-trade and said "Don't worry about having no cap space because of the Landry and JT contracts - I can make those contracts VANISH for Stauskas and a future protected first", I honestly would not have believed them - and I bet that post would get trolled hard.
JT's contract is the definition of fair market value. He's a good rotation player, just not a star - and that's exactly how he's getting paid

I'm not so sure about that.

Lillard > (Rondo?)
Blake < Collison
Matthews == Matthews (we hope)
Afflalo == McLemore
Batum < Gay
Aldridge < Cousins
Lopez == WCS??
Kaman > FA third big
McCollum == McCallum

There's a lot of relatively equal there, and if the team we are trying to put together clicks, you've got Cousins/Gay/Rondo/Matthews as the "big four", which is a step up from Lillard/Aldridge/Matthews/Batum in my book. There are some question marks there: Does Rondo shape up? Is Matthews healthy? But that core is a core that can make some noise.

Another guy that is out there is Robin Lopez....you know the guy that we got but didn't get in the Tyreke Evans sign and trade......hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. The previous moves by the FO has stripped away our talent base getting nothing in return for a few of the real assets we did have. If we can land viable vets and win now, it would be a huge deal......there is no 3-5 years down the road right now...this organization needs to turn it around now.

Get some vets in here to play with Cuz and lets make playoff push. There are pieces in place...get more pieces.

The Kings have agreed to a multi-year deal with guard James Anderson, a source told Yahoo Sports.

Probably a small Moreland type deal.
I mentioned him in the Summer Roster thread.....a good low level sign that can help us....will be able to swing between the 2and 3 although a bit smallish for 3 but a smart move depth wise.

No one is upset about who we might have picked over the next few years. We're upset because those picks along with Nik and JT could have gotten us back better players or better fitting players in return. We are GAMBLING on FA and already saw one of our targets get taken off the board since this trade broke. If we miss out on FA, we have NOTHING left to acquire more players unless we start shipping out pieces of our core, meaning we'll be making lateral moves at best.

JT is a good player TODAY. Nik could still develop into a solid rotation player, but we decided to trade him when his value is in the dumps. thinking this is a win now move is wrong. It's a super high risk move, and the reward is overpaying for Rondo, Wes Matthews, or Monte Ellis. Oh wait...

We're down to an injured player and a perpetual malcontent, neither of who are guaranteed to come here at all, much less show up and play well.

I am less worried about the draft picks and more concerned with signing the wrong players to long term deals. Matthews is a huge risk (I'd be all in if it wasn't for his injury). Rondo's attitude and recent play scare me. Ellis I'm okay with, but he seems like a weak "3rd scorer." I would have been more intrigued if we could have bolstered our bench with players like Bellineli, Joseph, Lin, or Stuckey, while keeping one of JT/Landy, and shipping one out attached to Stauskas.
