NBA Player, WWII Historian, and Author

I read a lot of non-fiction books, but I was surprised the name of an author credited on the cover a historical book entitled, Brothers in Arms.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

F.L. "Al" Alcindor, Sr. (Kareem's father), was best friends with a man named Leonard "Smitty" Smith in New York City back in the 1950s and 1960s. Smitty was a veteran of WWII, and of the 761st Tank Battalion, which was attached to George S. Patton's legendary Third Army. (The 3rd AD participated in the liberation of Baghdad) Smitty was Lewis Alcindor's (Kareem's) surrogate uncle back in New York City. Apparently, Lewis Alcindor was very impressed with Smitty and the exploits of the 761st, so he interviewed some of the veterans and collaborated with writer Anthony Walton to write this book.

The book focuses on the inter-racial aspects of fighting in WWII. I have not read the book yet, but it appears to be well written so far. Should be good.

Still don't understand why Alcindor took a Muslim name.
