Haven't been around for a while, but thought we might play a little game:

Who is this player and would we want her on our team?
She has the following characteristics:

1. could be playing for us on our court almost anytime.
2. would not disrupt the teams salary structure.
3. always, really always, does what the coach wants.
4. has a reputation for leaving it all on the court.
5. only regular player on her team with positive +/- average.
6. average +/- score after 13 games is +4.2.
7. efficiency ratings are running between 6 and 8.
8. was an all wnba defensive player not long ago.
9. is currently #3 in wnba in A/TO ratio.
10. is currently #2 in wnba in S/TO ratio.

Who could this be?

....

, indeed.

At the risk of sounding like an ***, this comes off like a passive-aggressive way of saying "Leave Chelsea Alone!" Why don't you just come out and say that, instead? Not only that, but I don't really get the sense that she's getting "picked on" in the first place...

Slim -

Hah! You're still in form I see. And yes, you've managed to get me cranked up a little, very little. :)

Here's the deal the way I see it. I'm not pushing Newton. I think she'll make her own way forward and will be just fine. But I think the way she's perceived by some is symptomatic of a kind of slippage in fan mentality.

I keep hearing shooters. But this is not supposed to be some kind of euro-ball shoot fest. At least I don't think so. This is supposed to be W-caliber pro ball, and it should be played that way and not like some kind of run and gun zoo assembly.

It disturbs me that we've only got one player with a positive +/_ rating for the first 1/3 of the season, and apparently no one is even aware of that. I realize that there are some obvious drawbacks with this rating, but as a statistical average over 1/3 season I think it has some merit.

I don't think we solve this problem with shooters. We need to play well-balanced players with sound fundamentals who can play effectively together, complement each other, score enough, and play defense. We haven't been playing the right players together this year.

And that's my basic gripe. So there! :D

I'll reserve comment on this player until the end of the season since with Whisenant back on the sidelines the mystery person's role will change. Those I have had conversations with know my feelings.

In a broader sense tho, until this team picks up its shooting percentage, these conversations will continue, and probably rightfully so. But getting right on the defensive side is A1 priority right now. And that they haven't been all season.
