[Game] Kings v. Grizzlies - 12/31/16 - 2PT/5ET

The Kings have had six straight top 8 picks and failed to draft an impact player. And their only great pick in that time was IT at #60 and they let him (and Evans) walk for nothing. The only impact trade was for Gay.

Now they almost no trade assets beyond Cousins, only have Boogie, Kosta, Barnes, WCS, Temple & the rookies guaranteed beyond this year and they are poised to lose their 2017 and 2019 1st rounders.

Sneaking into the 8th seed would be great, but then what?
The impact players can be 2016 - Malachi, Skal and Bogdan

That sounds so.....uplifting! Let's be the "bad" team that sneaks in, gets pounded 4-0 by the Warriors, then rinse and repeat next year!
This might not be entitlement talking, but it's definitely entitlement-adjace. Where does a fan of a team that's never* won a championship, that's currently riding a franchise-worst ten-year playoff drought get off looking down on an eighth-seed-and-sweep?

*Yes, I know that the franchise has won a championship, and you all know what the hell I meant, too.

Playoffs!? Seriously....cmon. 36-46 swept by Warriors in four non competitive games. That's good?

I'll answer that. No.
Sure it is, as a first step.

But it will likely take more than 36. Let's say minimum 39-43. Still, it changes the narrative.

Kings are currently on pace for 35 wins, rounding up.

The team had better come together and sort out some glaring issues. And also hope Cousins doesn't miss a significant number of games.

Losing the pick in a loaded draft plus having no real plan beyond making the 8th seed this year is what scares me the most about making the playoffs.

Yeah we have sucked at making picks the past 6-7 years but that does not mean you give up on the draft entirely, for small markets its STILL the best way to try to reload with top talent.

Let's not forget we aren't even 100% healthy and lost Ty Lawson as well. The whole "omg we suck" thing again is tiring
Yup, it'd be nice to get some different guys than Mcelmore, Collison, Gay, casspi etc. Matt Barnes and Ty Lawson to the rescue!

Maybe a serious change beyond this laughable roster would lead to less serious sucking.

This is next to nothing but Papa G looks pretty mobile for a man his size. Clearly has lost a lot of weight. I know the cool thing is to bash the kid but id like to see what he looks like 2-3 years down the line as he develops his floor game and builds some lean strength. Malachi looks better than Ben or Nik ever have. The kid has confidence and a swagger to his game/how he carries himself.

It turns into Sactownroyalty yet loses in here. Like calm your ass down we are still in the 8spot with the others 2 teams struggling as well.

Anyways nice to here about Malachi
Why are we even trying for 8th seed though? Our playoff "fight" might be the determining factor of us missing out on the playoffs AND losing our draft pick. This team is not very good. It doesn't take a specialist to see that outside of Cousins and Gay, we don't have much talent.

Our playoff fight might also be the determining factor in keeping Cousins, and in the process keeping our new coach long term. Because neitehr he nor Vlade will surive another 4 years of rebuilding.

No we aren't very good. So what? What, the 10th pick in this draft is going to save us? 8 drafts later, THIS 10th pick is the guy? How long until he saves us? 3 years from now? Five?

We're not very good. Best thing we can do to get good is to start moving in that direction and see what gets caught on our grill as we move forward. Some winning keeps a franchise player and a coach. Good enough. It also starts erasing the stigma hindering us in free agency and trades.

Thanks for once again reminding us all how to be fans. Been awhile since I heard this sage piece of advice and I was in need of a recharge. That's probably just the entitlement talking though right?

C'mon Brick.

You know in a rebuild the Kings wouldn't land the 10th pick. The Kings would completely nosedive if they dealt Boogie the same way they do every time he misses games. And if they dealt him to Boston for their pick swap with Brookly and next year's Nets pick you'd likely be looking at a top 4 pick from Brooklyn (they may go into the lottery with the most ping-pong balls) and another top 6 pick from the Kings in one of the best drafts in quite a while.

And it would likely mean two top 8 picks or better the next season.

I understand hating that path. It's still a crapshoot and especially so given that Vlade hasn't shown an amazing eye for talent.

The Kings can hope that with limited resources they land key pieces to put a winner around Boogie or trade him, have an absolutely awful team and gamble on striking gold in the draft.

Neither option is all that appealing but that's what happens after years of bad decisions.

I wasn't even aware people were still on the trade Cousins kick.

Oh...why or why even pursue the playoffs!!! :( :( :( Instead let's get terrible again....for years...and years...That's ridiculous. You don't do that with a mature franchise player and brand new high quality coach + brand new building. The team probably has another 20-25 losses upcoming this season, it would be nice to go through one without a certain segment of fans immediately weighing in with "oh noes! its over! oh woe is me! we must quit! I can't take it anymore! tank! tank I tell you!". good lord. Its like we are Spurs fans coming off of decades of winning and unable to stand the taste of even 1 loss.

I was assuming we were now complaining about pursuing the playoffs when we could get ourselves a wonderful #10 pick or so instead, because that is the key to any future WITH Cousins.

Either way, its dumb. We're not taking an early season dive, or have no signs of it, and people have to let go of the perverse fantasy that we are.

Agreed on Malachi, He has the length and the type of high release that is very hard to block. We are in desperate need of another player who can make shots. I'd give Malachi Ben's minutes. Afflalo can start with Malachi as backup shooting guard and SF. He might be a rookie and will make rookie mistakes, but Don't think he can do worse than Ben who still plays like a rookie . After this season, I never want to see Mclemore and Rudy Gay, ever again.

If we can make the playoffs or come close, we should. Our chances of keeping Cousins hinges on it. We will also be much more attractive to free agents, which can be much more important than any late lottery draft pick.

The last time Kings Fans were touting a college draft as "The best draft since...", we ended up with Nik Stauskas. I won't be fooled again.

It's a shortsighted view but you're welcome to it.

We'll have this conversation again next year I'm sure.

But making the playoffs this year would be nice. Something positive for once.

You tell me; I'm not the one turning my nose up at the eighth seed, or acting like I deserve "better" than seeing my team get swept by the Warriors, after a decade of not even having that opportunity.
Maybe so, but you are turning up your nose at fellow Kings fans for disagreeing with you about what's best for the team. I get that you disagree with anyone who doesn't think making the playoffs alone is a goal worth pursuing. That doesn't make them entitled. We've got fans telling us we need to make the playoffs to keep our coach and to keep DeMarcus. Well gee, okay, in that case I guess we have no choice. We've got other fans who think we'll never win anything with DeMarcus on the team anyway. We can't all be right. But this isn't ever about the playoffs at all is it? It's about "I'm right and you're wrong." In so many words.

And along those lines... I honestly don't care if we make the playoffs this year or not. I care if we make the playoffs for the next 10 years. Because playoff basketball is fun! I bet you care too. So if I think the best way to get there is to miss the playoffs this year but trade for the players who are going to make sure we don't miss the playoffs again and you think the best way is to make the playoffs this year and then add pieces in free agency to push further, what difference does it make? Why does somebody have to be right and somebody else have to be wrong? Could be we're both right and both strategies could lead to success. Or maybe it's the trade DeMarcus people who will be proven right :) Nobody knows!

But regardless I don't see how entitlement has anything to do with it. We're all rooting for the same losing team here. The entitled people only show up after the team starts winning. If you're looking for the right slander to apply to this situation I'd suggest you go with masochistic. Maybe we're just addicted to losing because it reinforces the idea that the universe is out to get us and excuses us from taking any personal responsibility for own unhappiness? That's an insult that'll really cut! But then I think that's BS too. It's definitely just the "I'm right and you're wrong" thing.
