Use neither when you need to actually stop somebody, which is the true problem up front. ;)

While I shrug at this signing, and have said its ok if Brockman and May are the 4th/5th bigs battling it out in a talent vs. scrap contest, this still does absolutely nothing to address our half decade long weakness up front defensively. We still need that legit defensive #3.
Hence my first response. I was actually thinking it might be nice to add someone else to the "bigs" list that could actually swat a shot away once in a while. Silly VF21...

Potential is one thing. Actually achieving something is an entirely different matter. At some point, I think potential has to be like yesterday's news... If it works out, I'll be very happy but I strongly advise that people keep him away from the myriad fast food joints, donut shops, etc. prevalent in the Natomas area.

thats why hawes didn't play summer league he is waiting to show off his newly aquired defensive prowess.

I can't help but feel that this is a "repeat" of the Maurice Taylor signing a couple of seasons ago with the same end result!
Maybe. But the difference being is that Mo Taylor was quite obviously on the downside of his career. He had already been in the league 10 years and had jumped around to 3-4 different teams.

May was a star at UNC and was drafted with those same hopes by Charlotte. He's had a tough career thus far but as the Kings FO and fans are hoping, he's just hit a minor bump in the road and if in shape, can be a solid 3rd or 4th big.

Maybe we have another tasteful Suns Mascot fat joke to brighten our season, ala Oliver Miller from the earlier dark ages!!!
:p

In all seriousness, cheaper than Ike, probably better than Mikki.
Why complain?
Welcome aboard and best of luck!
Yeah, I look at this in similar context, the VERY Big O and May are somewhat similar, and if May can get his weight down below 270 then he MIGHT be of assistance.

He can play the PG position as well as anyone else on this team. If thise is the sign that KT won't play for us ever again - it is worth the money. One year - no risk type of deal. On the other hand - a player who is injury prone to begin with - joined the Kings. You do the math.

I like this signing !!!

cheaper than Ike and will probably have about the same impact... in fact could prove to be a steal (sorta) if he is in better shape and healthy...

When I look at players that can be had for the league minimum, I see Rob Kurtz, Jake Voshkuhl, Patrick O'Bryant, etc. And if the choice is between those guys and Sean May, I'd rather take a flyer on May. Injury et al.

Look he is not a bad signing for the price that he comes with. A risk worth taking. The only problem is that he doesn't address our needs for the frontcourt, other than being another body that can come in an play.

He doesn't block shots, he doesn't play defence. He can score and he can rebound and thats it. If Hawes and Thompson are our frontcourt going forward then the 3rd big simply must be a defensive specialist who can ideally play both PF and C.

I hope there is a trade somewhere along the lines here because if this is it, we have not addressed our front court needs with this signing. Its just about a wash with last year. Take our Digou, plug in May and maybe add Brockman as another body that will get some random playing time from time to time but mostly be depth player usedful for practices.

May for the minimum would be a nice signing but only if you address the glaring needs by some other means because IMHO May doesn't address them.

I would have preferred Ike, but if this is for the minimum I think he is worth taking a flyer on. He definitely had some skills, hopefully he is in shape and healthy.

13 is a thin roster, we probably will ask Jerel Mcneal to hang around for a half season. May is a great pickup because he is playing for his next contract, and he has a centers body.

Thompson\Nocioni\Brockman\Green\Cassipi\Thomas
Hawes\May

Depth on the front court is pretty well covered.

Sorry but Sean May does not have a centers body. He's barely 6'9, extremely fat, not very quick and lacks athleticism. What he is is a finesse player that shoots well. Kind of the yin to Brockmans undersized hustler yang. He's also player one full season in the league, it just took him a combined 3 years to do it. And he apparently has an appetite for the night life to go along with his lack of work ethic and fondness for doughnuts. Like everyone has said, not a horrible move based on his one-time potential but even if he hits that, you still haven't addressed the bigman weaknesses.

I was watching the Blazers summer league game yesterday and they had Nate McMillan on. He was asked about their Sean May workout and sounded "underwhelmed". He said he shot the ball really well and didn't seem to be favoring his surgically repaired leg but that he still needed to get in much better shape.

A cheaper, better shooting, worse defender, and a tad better rebonder than Ike at 1/3 the price. not a negative pickup. if legs are ok good blossom into a good pickup. still would like to add some length on the bench as well.

lets see

beno
evans
sergio
martin
garcia
noc
greene
casspi
thompson
may
brockman
thomas
hawes

thats 13 i still think a trade looms.
Off topic but how excited about that roster if Thomas and Beno weren't on the roster at this point. To be fair Beno may turn it around and be viable until the end of his contract (which would make him more tradeable as well), but to at least not see Thomas's name on there. *Sigh* Only one more season, or near the trade deadline.

Well, that's the difference between a team like the Blazers and the Kings, they are more maticulous where we're in a position to gamble on a guy like May due to us being pathetic. With a guy like May, I look at it like this...

Best Case: Antionne Carr
Worst Case: Oliver Miller

Both of the above are big guys who went different directions on their careers based on personal choices, Antionne was fat and chose the gym and became a 20 pt scorer for us after coming over in a trade for Kenny Smith...The Very Big O on the other hand chose the Winchells and never regained the potential he showed during his first 2 seasons in the PHX. Mr. May: the ball is in your court.

According to Draftexpress measurement history, we gained a half an inch by signing May over Diogu. :D May is exactly the same height in his bare feet as Brockman. 6'7" and 6'8.5" in shoes. Unlike Brockman though he does have a very long wingspan at almost 7'2" and a standing reach of 8'10". So that does help make up for some of his lack of height. If this comes to pass, then he is what he is. A cheap investment that may end up being a good investment, or, as someone stated, a good benchwarmer.

Just one thing confuses me about this signing.

College stats
Sean May, 6'8", around 270 pounds:
17.1 pts, 56.7% FG, 0.0% 3-pt, 75.8% FT, 10.7 reb, 1.7 assists, 1.0 blk, 1.2 stl
John Bryant, 6'10", around 270 pounds
18.1 pts, 59.6% FG, 0.0 3-pt, 78.7% FT, 14.2 reb, 1.1 assists, 2.5 blk, 0.5 stl

If we really wanted a big who is fighting a weight problem, why did we only give John Bryant eight minutes of garbage time in the last Summer League game? He's a better defender than May, younger, and his knees are intact. Yet we seemed to have roughly zero interest in him.

I must confess to not being totally up to date on all the reasons for May's weight gain. I haven't hit old newspaper reports on him yet. But its fair to say that if your having knee problems, and I don't know for sure when that started, its harder to maintain your playing weight.

From everything I've been able to read on him, no one has ever questioned that he has talent. Everything in his career has centered around his being injured most of the time and his excessive weight.. Its sort of chicken and egg thing. Not sure which came first. Still, no excuse for living at Dunkin Donuts. Lets hope he's learned his leason. Lets also hope we've learned ours and there's no long term contracts involved.
