Man sought after making Virginia Tech-type threats

Law enforcement officials are looking for a man who told his parents and his pastor that he wanted to make the killing spree at Virginia Tech this week "look mild."

Jeffery Thomas Carney, 28, is being sought and is possibly armed with automatic weapons and explosives, Sutter County Undersheriff J. Paul Parker said.

"We are really hoping that we can catch up with this guy today," said Parker, who added Carney's parents are alarmed at the situation.

Carney's father, Thomas, would not comment when reached by a Bee reporter Thursday morning.

Deputies have telephone recordings of messages Carney left Wednesday in which he claims to be armed with an "AK-47, improvised explosive devices and poison."

"He said he wanted to do suicide by cop," said Parker, who added his department has had numerous previous contacts with Carney.

"He has been in our jail many times in the past, most recently for domestic violence," Parker said.

Carney is described as 6-feet, 1-inch, 190 pounds with brown eyes and short brown hair. He is a transient, but his last known address was with family in North Yuba City. Carney is possibly driving a red mid-1990s Honda/Toyota-type sedan with a black hood.

Sutter County authorities have notified neighboring law enforcement officials in Yuba County. Area school districts have been alerted and some schools have been locked down, Parker said.

Yuba Unified School District has posted an alert on their website advising parents and staff that schools have been placed on a "heightened level of security." Schools are asked to operate in a lockdown mode until further notice and campus supervision has been increased, according to the alert.

Officials at the district, the largest in the area, said the lockdown mode was similar to a rainy-day schedule. Doors are locked, children are not allowed to take recess outdoors and are escorted to the bathrooms. Parents are allowed to take their children out of school if they choose, Deputy Superintendent Baldev Johal said.

"Some parents are taking their children out, but we are encouraging them not to because they are safe," Johal said. "We have received no direct threat, but law enforcement has told us that they think they know of a man who wants to go on a killing spree. We are following the direction of law enforcement."

The district has 17 schools with 12,500 students.

Anyone with information on Carney is asked to contact Sutter County Sheriff's officials at (530) 822-7307.

The Bee's Ryan Lillis and Sheila Kern contributed to this report.

They've broken in to regular programming on Ch. 13 to broadcast the audio portion of a press conference being held right now...

As an aside, I'm upset with the Bee for the politically correct attitude of not posting the man's race, which I think could be important in this situation. His mugshot is being shown on TV and he is obviously white. In a case like this, I sure think that should have been included. If people get offended, too bad.

I think the local law enforcement is doing an excellent job in getting the word out. Yuba County, as some of you might know, has gone through something like this before. The shootings at Lindhurst High School occurred in Olivehurst, which is south of Yuba City. (From the Appeal-Democrat: "It’s been nearly 15 years since Eric Houston – at the time a former student at the school in Olivehurst – walked on to the campus May 1, 1992, and began shooting. He held 80 students hostage for several hours before finally surrendering to police.

At the end - three students, Beamon Hill, Judy Davis, Jason White, and one teacher, Robert Brens - were dead, and 10 others wounded.")

I guess he just surrendered himself to police. I really enjoyed the police helicopter flying around in the sky over my workplace all day. Thank god no one got hurt and maybe this guy will get some psychiatric help.

Yes, he surrended with an attorney. He reportedly said he didn't understand why there was so much fuss...

I don't know about anyone else but I'm very glad the authorities took this whole thing seriously.
