What Do We Do (Now That Gay is Hurt)?

#1
Trade #1
Wizards Get:
Darren Collison, Omri Casspi, & Willie Cauley-Stein
Wizards Give: Kelly Oubre, Trey Burke, & Tomas Satoransky
Why for Wizards? The Wizards are the 5th seed and only 3 games back from the 3rd seed after a very slow start. Their starting lineup is excellent, but their bench is severely hurting them. Collison & Casspi would upgrade their bench tremendously so they can hold on to the leads they generate. Cauley-Stein provides some value in the form of a big with potential. For both Mahinmi & Gortat, the Wizards are paying $28 mil this year, $29.5 mil next year, & $29.5 mil the following year. If Cauley-Stein develops, it could allow the Wizards to move one of their bigs and use that cap space elsewhere to improve the team.

PG - Wall / Collison
SG - Beal / Thornton / McClellan
SF - Porter / Casspi
PF - Morris / Nicholson / Smith / Ochefu / House
C - Gortat / Mahinmi / Cauley-Stein

King Get: Kelly Oubre, Trey Burke, & Tomas Satoransky
Kings Give: Darren Collison, Omri Casspi, & Willie Cauley-Stein
Why for Kings? Collison & Casspi could walk for nothing next year and the Kings are not in a good position to compete this year. Cauley-Stein has potential, but we already have Cousins & Papagiannis as long term Cs while also having Labissiere developing at PF. Trading for a SF prospect would be wise as we don't have any youth at that position. Satoransky is also on a very cheap long term deal and can be a good 3rd PG in case injuries hit down the road.

PG - Lawson / Satoransky / Burke
SG - Temple / Richardson / McLemore
SF - Oubre / Afflalo / Barnes / Gay
PF - Labissiere / Tolliver
C - Cousins / Koufos / Papagiannis

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade #2
Rockets Get:
Kosta Koufos & Anthony Morrow
Rockets Give: Corey Brewer, Sam Dekker, & Hou 2017 1st (Top 22 protected)
Why for Rockets? Rockets have been rumored to have interest in Koufos. This trade allows them to cut Brewer's bad contract which goes through the 2017-18 season for a good defensive C to help their defense out. Dekker has looked decent this year, but Morrow gives them yet another elite 3pt shooter (42% career) to play in D'Antoni's offense.

PG - Beverley / Ennis / Brown
SG - Harden / Gordon / McDaniels
SF - Ariza / Morrow
PF - Anderson / Harrell / Onuaku / Wiltjer
C - Koufos / Capela / Nene

Thunder Get: Garret Temple, Ty Lawson, & Sam Dekker
Thunder Give: Cameron Payne, Anthony Morrow, & Nick Collison
Why for Thunder? They cash in on their young PG considering they have Westbrook already and Lawson is better right now (which should help them compete this year). Temple gives them a good 3&D wing to complement Westbrook & Oladipo, and it also allows them to make Roberson available in a trade considering they don't want to give him a big payday as a RFA. Dekker also gives them a good SF prospect on a rookie deal to develop as well.

PG - Westbrook / Lawson / Christon
SG - Oladipo / Temple / Huestis
SF - Roberson / Dekker / Abrines / Singler
PF - Sabonis / Grant / Lauvergne / Collison
C - Adams / Kanter

Kings Get: Cameron Payne, Corey Brewer, Nick Collison, & Hou 2017 1st (Top 22 protected)
Kings Give: Garrett Temple, Kosta Koufos, & Ty Lawson
Why for Kings? Kings aren't going anywhere with the current team. Temple is a good 3&D SG, but he's going to be 31 at the start of next season and won't be as effective when this team is ready to compete. Koufos is a great backup C, but we shouldn't be "wasting" our cap space on a great backup C who probably should be getting 24 mpg when our starting C should be logging 36 minutes a night at the C position. Plus we have Papagiannis as a potentially cheap replacement in the future. Lawson has been productive this year as well, but he's expiring and could leave for nothing next year. Meanwhile, we get a PG with good potential & a late 1st to add to our assets.

PG - Payne / Satoransky / Burke
SG - Richardson / McLemore / Brewer
SF - Oubre / Afflalo / Barnes / Gay
PF - Labissiere / Tolliver / Collison
C - Cousins / Papagiannis

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade #3
Team X Gets:
Ben McLemore
Team X Gives: 2018 2nd round pick
Why for Team X? Take a chance on McLemore for a low price.

Kings Get: 2018 2nd round pick
Kings Give: Ben McLemore
Why for Kings? With Bogdanovic & Richardson as SGs of the future, it's time to get some sort of value for McLemore.

PG - Payne / Satoransky / Burke
SG - Richardson / Afflalo / Brewer
SF - Oubre / Barnes / Gay
PF - Labissiere / Tolliver / Collison
C - Cousins / Papagiannis

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The vision at work here is to add as much young talent for our veterans that are expiring/have some value. Meanwhile, we're okay taking on contracts that don't expire until after the 2017-18 season because a lot of our cap is tied up until then.

I understand that these trades might make us worse than Philadelphia, but I don't care. What's done is done. We need a pick next year. It's that simple.

For this scenario, I'm going to assume Barnes picks up his player option. I highly doubt anyone would give him that much money elsewhere in FA so I think it's a no brainer that he is here next year. I'm also assuming Gay opts in because of his injury. However, if we don't extend a qualifying offer to Burke, waive Afflalo, waive Tolliver, & sign Bogdanovic to a $8 mil/year contract, we'd have enough cap space to max a RFA. Not saying it's likely, but it's nice to have that flexibility if we can convince a guy like Porter to sign with us.

The more likely scenario is that we would not extend a qualifying offer to Burke, keep Afflalo, keep Tolliver, & sign Bogdanovic to a $8 mil/year contract. In the draft we would have the worse pick between ourselves & Philadelphia and Houston's 1st. We could potentially take Ntilikina or Fox with our pick and maybe Jonathan Motley with HOU's pick we'd have this team going into next year:

2017-18 Roster
PG - Payne / Ntilikina / Satoransky
SG - Bogdanovic / Richardson / Brewer
SF - Oubre / Afflalo / Barnes / Gay
PF - Labissiere / Tolliver / Motley
C - Cousins / Papagiannis

Then in the 2018 offseason, we would have Gay, Afflalo, Tolliver, Brewer, & Barnes come off the books while adding our 2018 1st (probably lottery looking at the 2017-18 roster above), our 2018 2nd (can swap with POR), & the 2nd round pick via the McLemore trade. Not to mention Cousins max extension would kick in as well. This would give us approximately $44 mil in cap space with the following team on the books:

2018-19 Roster
PG - Payne / Ntilikina / Satoransky
SG - Bogdanovic / Richardson
SF - Oubre
PF - Labissiere / Motley
C - Cousins / Papagiannis
***SAC 2018 1st, SAC 2018 2nd, & Team X 2018 2nd***

With that $44 mil in cap space and the allure of Cousins and our young talent, perhaps we can land a big FA by then. Below is a list of the notable FAs in that offseason:

Will Barton
Avery Bradley
Danny Green
Gary Harris
Rodney Hood
Zach LaVine
Kyle Anderson
Paul George
Doug McDermott
TJ Warren
Andrew Wiggins
Aaron Gordon
Jabari Parker
Julius Randle
Noah Vonleh
Derrick Favors

Pipe Dream: Max Paul George. He's from California (Palmdale) and went to college in Fresno. Perhaps the California connection, the Team USA experience with Cousins, the arena, the culture (hopefully the rep has started to change by then), and the attractive young talent is enough to steal him. Again, it's obviously a pipedream considering Indiana has a financial advantage over us to sign him and we don't have a history of signing big time FAs, but one can dream, right?

I love your trades and would do all of them but the thing to do right now is fire Vlade and hire Sam Hinkie and force DJ to play the kids
