I included Ben's numbers from last year for comparison to highlight the problem: we still don't have an NBA caliber SG. Now on the positive side Ben looked a little more settled, the ballhandling wasn't such a disaster, he seemed to have found a way to be less of an active drain on the team's energy trying to cover for him. And he was doing a better job of hitting his threes in the preseason, although that tailed in the last few games. Nonetheless, he still basically made an impact in 1 game of 7, frequently missed open shots badly again, still exhibited lateral movement problems on defense, and was so invisible as to leave us a man short most nights. You can say baby steps forward, but the baby steps have to end now because against the murderer's row we run into to start the season, if this is the Ben we get, and if the coach insists on starting him, Cuz better channel Wilt circa '61 or we are just screwed. Last year he had a claim on worst major minute player in the NBA. Off of preseason baby steps maybe now he's only the worst starting SG in the NBA.

Preseason started off pretty promisingly but then began to tail. There were fewer of those saavy high IQ plays, he was missing shots he's going to hit, and for the last few games it looked more like he was trying to do no harm than creating and trying to have a positive impact. In one of them he got punished on defense as well. He continued to display enough rounded skills to make some contributions and avoid becoming a liability, but after the first couple of games there was no real punch. That's why I said I see him more as future glue guy than star, and its why promising or not relying on a rookie to give you oomph is always a dicey business. he could click into gear against this level completion in 1 week, 1 month or 4 months, you just don't know.
