Its something you are born with.

Matt Barnes can spend 24 hours a day in the gym for the next decade and he will NEVER be a star. Just the way it is. Everyone is NOT born equal. Only one of that trio with the potential to be something more than a role player is Martin, but he's got some considerable obstacles to overcome (bad form on his shot, bad body) and is not as well suited for the role player position as is a Mo Evans.

In any case, they are nice style players to have around if you have a star to make it all work, but we don't. We're stuck in an icky accumulation of talent mode where we have to try to wear you down with bunches of average players all on the court together. Lacking a great player or players who can dominate action, we depend on everybody on the floor trying to divy up those shots and stats, and that makes role players a bit problematic. Basically our "stars" aren't good enough to cover up for the role players' limitations. They have a hard enough time just taking care of their own business, let alone creating opportunities for limited teammates.
A lot of it has to do with opprotunity as well.

Bricklayer- your description of Mo Evans seems to be the same description of Peja except he can't jump or rebound and doesn't scrap and he was mentioned in the same breath as Garnnet a few years back for MVP. Peja has a great jumper "PERIOD". Ask yourself what you would like Mo Evans to do then think and see if Peja does those things. Then think if Peja is good enough to be "the core" why can't Mo be a roleplaying starter?

The MVP conversation was ridiculous of course -- probably wouldn't have been in the Top Ten this year with that same performance. Just an incredible off year for almost every superstar in the league, and even so was so far behind a KG or Duncan (24pts 6rebs 2ast vs. 24pts 14rebs 6ast???) as to make the comparison silly.

But ignoring that, yes, Mo Evans is a better basketball player than Peja in virtually every way EXCEPT that jumper. But that jumper is what separates just another player from a star level player. All it takes is one tremendous skill to make all the difference. (and I would argue as well that Peja's constant movement and ability to hit off balance jumpers set him apart from a true standstill guy like Mo -- Peja can't do much with the ball, but he does compensate soemwhat with off the ball movement, when he's not taking the night off in the corner).

And yes, Mo could be a roleplaying starter...if you had a superstar or two to justify starting a roleplayer. Mo has some talent, but he's not a lockdown defender. He's inconsistent. He's not strong enough to justify starting him if you actually need the person in that position to win the matchup on most nights. But if you have Kevin Garnett, and he's destroying people over at PF or SF, then ou can start a roleplayer or two to just take care of the little things and stay out of the way. You can lose the OG matchup (and Mo is too small to play SF consistently) if you are annihilating people at other posiitons. Mentioned before though, if you are us, and you have zero guaranteed All-Stars in the lineup, if you start mixing those good but not great players with roleplayers/below average starters it doesn't take long until you are the Lakers and back in the lottery.

That was the year Webber, Iverson, McGrady, & Carter were either injured or just gave up because they were not going to make the playoffs.
