Landry out for 4-5 months

this was the risk that vivek ranadive took when he hired a rookie gm in pete d'alessandro, who clearly did not understand the difficulties that a small and undesirable market poses when attempting to attract free agent talent. after a lot of bluster about being aggressive in his first offseason on the job, PDA predictably failed to make the "splashy" signing he was hoping for, and then decided to underscore that failure by outbidding nobody at all so he could overpay carl landry. the move was much reviled at the time, and it continues to plague the kings' salary cap situation, while landry struggles to stay healthy long enough to log a few meaningful minutes on a losing team that could, if nothing else, use his veteran IQ. what an unfortunate waste...

If this is the same wrist that bothered him at the end of the year I wonder why they waited this long for surgery? He should still be back for the start of the season anyway but why wait?

Let's make things clear this was a Malone move.

Will he get all of his money even though he's injured? Will his salary still count towards the cap?

Landry is a terrible signing that should've never happened. smh

some early rumors claimed mike malone requested that the kings sign carl landry, while more recent rumors claim that pete d'alessandro pushed hardest for the signing. more to the point, malone was the former head coach of the sacramento kings, and not the general manager charged with consummating player transactions. even if one were to hold malone responsible for the acquisition of carl landry, the signing represented a clear overpay, as no other reported teams were bidding on landry's services. that falls at PDA's feet regardless of which rumors one chooses to believe...

Just because no other reported teams were bidding doesn't mean no other teams were bidding. Perhaps it was a bit of an overpay but not a lot IMO.

No. Incredibly. No.

Malone wanted Landry. Sure. The part where we ridiculously overpay for Landry in both years and salary? That's all PDA/Vivek. I don't understand how people don't get this. Malone didn't sit there bargaining with Landry. PDA, CAP SPECIALIST, and Mr. Irritant signed off on the salary.

It was a horrible move then and the overwhelming majority of the basketball world called it a horrible move instantly. Everyone was wrong, as it's been so much worse.

If the scuttlebutt is to believed Vivek's GS connections told him to sign Landry.

But I suppose the fact that we don't even know who to attribute a signing to (whether good or bad) is symptomatic of the issues plaguing the Kings the last couple years.

Here's to hoping Vlade gets everyone on the same page and of one voice.

This whole thread is what's been wrong with our FO situation. In the course of 16 posts, we've had several people saying "This is a PDA, Vivek or Malone move" Like what??? The fact that we aren't sure who actually is behind our roster moves needs to stop.

Not like he was a tradable asset anyways..... or an asset on the court.

So....who cares. This signing bottomed out in the crap department the second Landry signed his name to it.

According to a search, Landry didn't play against the Heat on Jan 16, 2105 due to a sprained right wrist.

That suggests that he injured it in the Mavs game (that Boogie fouled out with those 2 horrible offensive fouls in the last minute). Carl BTW went 7 for 10 for 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Since then, he's apparently had a torn ligament in his wrist....?

1) How can he possibly have waited until now for surgery? This further makes me question the Kings' medical staff, and I've had questions about them for years - I don't care if VF21 knows people on that crew or if the trainer is a nice guy.

2) If he had a torn wrist ligament, does that somewhat explain his lackluster play in the latter half of the season? Certainly explain if his shot went downhill (that was previously almost automatic).
I'd imagine it's hard to fight for rebounds when your rebounding hand has a torn wrist ligament....

5 months seems like a long time to be out with a wrist to me. But whatever, I'm sure that's legit. Seems like he should have had surgery a month ago though.

The hand/wrist is quite delicate, and if it is a significant tear (grade 2 or above) then he will certainly be out that long. For the first few weeks he will be in a splint (immobilized), the first 2 months (possibly up to 3) he will not be allowed to lift any weight with his wrist due to possible damage to the repaired tendon, with the last 1-2 months really focusing on returning to function. However, it's not like we were fighting for our playoff lives. This surgery should have been done 2+ months ago at least. He will be able to return to action/basketball in 5 months. His shooting stroke will take at least another few weeks to return, not to mention basketball conditioning. Poor management of this condition, at least from the outside looking in.

Them's the breaks. When the Kings were on a roll at the beginning of last season, Landry was a big part of that. I'm sure, at that time, whoever was responsible for his signing was feeling relieved. But now there's no relief in sight to get over Landry's overly-generous contract. At this point, we just have to consider it a bad debt and move on.

If Vivek was going to fire PDA over not signing Landry for that amount, we're worse off than I thought.

In the podcast, that everyone was discussing couple of days ago, Ham claimed again, that Landry was Vivek's hire. Malone didn't mind, but he wasn't driving force. PDA wasn't either - Carl just doesn't look like PDA type of player.
