Kings Fan’s TV Show Draft! - Round 20

#1
KingsFans.com has just received terrific news. An anonymous fan of the site has been following our tropical island drafts over the last two summers, and has decided to donate a large island in the south pacific for Kings fans to move to! There is a small town (Kingstown :)) and beautiful surrounding landscape.

The town attractions and landscape has already been aptly named too…

There is the VF21's Forest, Piksi's Hills of Pessimism, Cruz Dude's Epic Beach, the Bricklayer Penthouses and Suites, and the GoGoGadget Bar and Italian Restaurant. Downtown you will find SLAB’s Dungeon of Pain and Torment (The Jail), NME’s Music and Comic Shop, Jespher’s Physical Therapy Clinic, Löwenherz Surf Shop, AleksandarN’s Internet Café, Warhawk’s Multiplex Theaters, Bozzwell’s Beer and Brats BBQ, and SacKings7’s Arcade. Other attractions include the pdx/atx Amphitheater, D-Mass's Academy of Sciences, Spike and Captain Factorial’s Calculator Factory, NoBonus's Premier Comedy Club, Mr. S£im Citrus's Wax Museum of Kung-Fu Legends, and many others...

The one thing lacking is a good TV studio. The Kingstown natives are building one, and they also just so happen to be looking for a Programming Director. Kingstown Island will already have television access to all sporting events (naturally), so it will only need additional TV programs, that will be available live and on demand (entire seasons etc.).

The task is to determine which TV shows the programming director will take to our new island. In typical TDOS fashion, we’ve decided to have a draft. Once a TV show has been taken, it is unavailable to the other programming director candidates (drafters). This will be a 20 round serpentine draft with an 18 hour clock. The programming director with the most popular list gets the job, and the respect (trophy) that goes with it :).

First, some rules…The citizens of Kingstown Island have made some requests, and each drafter must accommodate them:

1. No adult premium channels/shows will be allowed (PlayboyTV etc.). Family friendly/board appropriate stuff only. Please PM VF21 if there are any questions as to what is permissible.

2. No making up your own TV shows. There isn’t enough money in the budget for that, and there’s already enough shows in television history to go from (Broadcast TV/Cable/Satellite Shows Only).

3. The entirety of each show is also taken with each choice (every episode of every season). When a show is picked it is off the board.

4. The island already has on demand access to all sporting events live and historically, so there is no need to fight over Kings games as everyone can already watch all of them :).

5. This is just a draft of TV shows. No movies will be allowed, though entertainment shows about movies would be permissible. Warhawk doesn’t need the competition for his multiplex theaters. If it has a unique IMDB page, it is a unique show and is draft eligible.

6. Timed out picks will be forfeited if not made up within 24 hours. After 3 time outs, you lose a final round pick (please pick when it's your turn).

Please use this thread to sign up for the position if you are interested. We will be accepting 16 applications (drafters). Happy TDOS!

I want to participate, but will admit to being less and less interested in these drafts as they get more intricately structured. The movie, music, video game, and car drafts were all fun to read and participate in without resorting to "must pick at least one of each genre" gimmicks.

Don't mean this to be obnoxiously whiny, so I hope it doesn't come across that way, but is that element really necessary? I, personally, just like the idea of picking shows that we like without having to worry about bending and twisting them into some other structure. Having to pick a news program or game show, in my case, is going to mean bumping shows that I like much better and making my completed list much less me.

Just my couple pennies. I'll play along either way.

I have been waiting for this draft, but - much like G3 - I have a problem with the idea of mandatory requirements. As she has pointed out, the drafts last year did not make it mandatory for particular genre requirements.

Part of the interest in these kinds of things is variety and the more restrictions you place on things, the less fun they become. I would suggest the participants be allowed to vote - much as Bricklayer allowed - on whether or not they want specific genre requirements as part of the rules.

Note #1 - When AleksandarN originally proposed this, his only restriction was that your choices had to total a certain number of hours at the end of the draft. I think that provides for a lot more variety and, therefore, a lot more interest.

Note #2 - I just spoke with Kingsgirl4, who is experiencing some computer glitch or something. She's interested but was unable to post to the board...

Note #1 - When AleksandarN originally proposed this, his only restriction was that your choices had to total a certain number of hours at the end of the draft. I think that provides for a lot more variety and, therefore, a lot more interest.
With all of the programs being on demand, it seems silly to have a time limit to the length of the shows, as you could just watch 2 episodes...

I'll see what I can do with rule #1. I just thought I'd throw that idea out there and see if it stuck :).
Note #2 - I just spoke with Kingsgirl4, who is experiencing some computer glitch or something. She's interested but was unable to post to the board...
Great. I'll add her to the big board.

Well, crap. If I have a factory, I should be in this draft. I also vote nay for rule #1. I think removing the rule allows us to get to know each other a little better.

I was merely pointing out what AleksandarN had originally proposed. I don't think it had anything to do with the current availability of shows - it was more intended, if I'm reading his post correctly, to reflect a blend between 30-minute shows and 1-hour offerings.

Just as an aside? Not everyone has "on demand"...

:)

Everyone in Kingstown has the Kings on demand :p

And the original Rule 1 has been voted off the island and the remaining rules renumbered. Congrats!

Just no sex stuff (Playboy etc.). HBO is all good :).
As with all the other drafts, the only restriction will be if something you want to post goes against the rules of posting at Kingsfans.com These drafts do not supercede those rules.

I am not in this one, as I don't watch much TV (other than Kings games) and the few series I would select would probably be off the board in the first round or not be popular enough to garner any votes.

From a practical standpoint:

How many rounds you talkin? I don't see it mentioned......

Also, standard 24 hour clock?

If I'm on once in the morning and once at night both around 8am/pm. does that make me not a nuisance should I want to join?

I'm down for this.

BTW: for those who don't have On Demand, it's this awesome comcast feature that allows you to go into a huge menu and watch pretty much whatever you want whenever you want. Most cases it has all the new episodes on there too. One of the greatest inventions ever, especially if you have a 2 year old and need the T.V. to babysit for a minute!

I am out for this one. Not enough TV knowledge on the whole. But I will get the folks over at the calculator factory to work on crunching the ratings numbers...

This will be a 20 round draft with an 18 hour clock (added to main rules). Thanx Warhawk :).

Well... it has been around over 60 years...
OK, but 60 years of lots of crap is just more crap. :D But I can see where digging through those piles may yield the odd gem.

Doesn't matter to me either way, of course. ;)

I am assuming that if a series has been remade or "imported" (stolen and copied) at some point you will need to specify which is being taken, as I doubt that listing one show would net you both, right?

Correct, unless the cast is identical also (if applicable:confused:).
