Sacramento Kings versus Denver Nuggets

By Stephen Tetsu, Runner-up for Rookie of the Year

Pretty sure that's gotta be a foul on someone.

And now it's a streak! But boy howdy, was it ugly.

You can say many things about the start to the season. You could say it's surprising. You could say it's given you hope. You could say that this team plays good defense. You could say that this team plays so ugly it gives you explosive diarrhea.

Yes, believe it or not, the Sacramento Kings have started off the season 3-1. The last time we started 3-1, piksi was still writing game threads! (See the evidence here ) Also, Donte Greene was our starting small forward and Francisco Garcia started the season opener (sadly, he's still better than both of our current shooting guards combined). Most disturbingly of all, Luther Head was a rotational player.

But back to our 3-1 start. Things are getting wild in Kings land.

I mean, this is unprecidented! This is crazy! Well, not Ron Artest crazy but possibly RomCom crazy or soap opera crazy or something in between. Before the season started, most of our esteemed national pundits were looking at the Kings as a possible choice for "Worst of the West" and yet one week in, here we stand in the middle of the pack for the playoff hunt (too early? Probably). There are little kids now tuning into Kings games who weren't even born the last time the Kings didn't suck. Heck, I'm pretty sure Nik Stauskas was still in elementary school the last time the Kings made the playoffs.

The point being, we've waited a long time to be good again. Now, I'm not saying that we are good because that would totally jinx it and ruin my day but I am saying that if there ever were a time for the Kings to stop sucking, now would be the time.

I mean, barely even two weeks ago, a large chunk of the members on this very site were resigning themselves to another lottery bound, twenty-something win season mired in mediocrity and Reggie Evans shooting jumpers. While it's still early in the season, I think it's safe to say that if Mike Malone can keep his squad playing defense like they have been, twenty-something wins would be a huge disappointment. With all that said and all that good cheer in the air, we're probably going to wind up losing fifteen in a row and end up replacing Mike Malone with Kenny Natt again.

But focusing on the uglyfest that was the road game against the Nuggets, the first word that comes to mind is grit. Considering how hard the team fought to beat the Clippers the day before and how Denver is hard to play in or whatever, the Kings really had no right to win this game.

Thankfully, the Denver Nuggets are pretty "not good" at this point in time as recovering Gallo plays like a drunk college student in rec league, Faried and Lawson are still ill-suited for Brian Shaw's system (if he has one) (and they're also very short), Aaron Afflalo apparently forgot how to shoot over summer vacation, and the Nuggets generally don't know how to defend a team that attacks them in the paint.

Even though it was a close game, it wasn’t really a “close game”. Demarcus convinced Michael Malone to sit the starters until there were only a few minutes left so a lot of the closeness can be attributed to our bench players facing off against the Nuggets starters for a lot of the second half. Also our starters looked more lethargic than Chuck Hayes after hitting the buffet line so it's really a miracle we ever took the lead in the first place.

But once again, the Nuggets are the Nuggets. And thus our non-smallballing, defense-playing ways were too much for their, well, Nougaty goodness.

Post of the Game
Okay, I'll be the one to say it - if we still had IT, we would not have won that game. Darren Collison was the right decision.
We're all gonna DIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! Pessimism of the Game
When they write the history of Sacramento Kings basketball, this game will definitely be the running for ugliest game ever played. Last night was poetry. This is profane graffiti.
wtf line up? um. can someone tell malone we need to make the playoffs so every game counts. thanks.
Awards Time
Tony Delk Memorial Award- Wilson Chandler went crazy, rabid (read: not awesome) beast mode on us in the second half but aside from that no one really worked us over more than they should have, which is probably a sign that the defense is churning out some good performances.

Jason Hart Award- Derrick Williams is like a human sad trumpet sound. At least he grabbed some rebounds against Denver, on most occasions these days he doesn't even get you those. Additionally, his hair looks weird.

Mikki Moore Award- Ben McLemore usually has one awesome dunk per game. And then nothing else. On offense at least. Recently his defense has been picking up. But still.

Shareef Abur Rahim Award-
Today and everyday until he retires, the geriatric junk shooter Kobe Bryant. Have fun sucking, a-hole.

Mateen of the Game - Ryan Hollins. The dude is up and on his feet almost every play, even if he still in warmups. Might've even seen some towel waving to boot. #TeamPlayer

Thomas Robinson Award- Nik Stauskas's statline: less than two minutes of play, three fouls, one ticked off Joey Crawford. Welcome to the NBA, rook. Now work on trying to make a shot or two.

WTF Moment of the Game- Joey Crawford and the refs get confused and think they're recording a novelty rap song about girls, promptly turn the game into a seven hour long, two-hundred foul slugfest. If Dick Bavetta were reffing this game, he'd have probably died of old age before the fourth quarter.

    This team scares me.
A good, knowledgeable friend of mine told me that SAC would make the playoffs this year and I literally scoffed. But after watching this team play a bit, they are legit. Gone are the days when our Nugz could just pencil in a win when Sacto showed on the sched (mah abbrevs!).
  • 8:37 AM
They are tired, we should run and take advantage of it you say, hmm...
Sounds a lot like what we should have done in last OKC game to me
  • 10:07 AM
    Not expecting a win
Nuggets offense doesn’t have an identity yet..and this Kings team can score.
  • 5:10 PM
King are the anti Nuggets a really good starting five and little or no depth.... if we can't score we will get whipped.... Pleas run Ty attack from the opening tip.
  • 6:10
    Who is Jason Thompson
  • 6:12
It would be nice to see the Kings not suck for a change
    starting after this nuggs set
  • 6:22
how long till they give up on craplemore
  • 6:23
    we are the new grizzlies
  • 6:31
so you are playing a team on a back to back and decide to play at their pace.
Why do the Nuggets allow teams to set the pace…sad.
  • 6:37
they have landry?...damn he is nugget killer #9
  • 6:41
i must say the kings have the worst backcourt in the league
  • 6:53
    what's with derrick william's hair?
  • 6:57
I think there needs to be an investigation on the rims in the Pepsi Center.
They’re obviously not regulation in some manner.
  • 7:13
Ha! Intentional chest butt from Nurkic to Cousins. Love that kid
  • 7:16
    wow, we're really not good
I have no idea how we’re gonna win in sac on Wednesday if we cant even beat them in Pepsi when they’re on the second half of a back to back.
  • 7:23
Both teams playing so very poorly. Combined with the 4000 foul calls, it really makes for entertaining sports.
I am cranky. With very goddamned good reason to be. It’s way early in the season, but this is not pretty.
  • 7:38
    HERE WE GO NUGGETS!!
Fastbreaks are killing them. Lets turn up the intensity and blow them back to Sac town!
  • 7:41
We might use all 18 fouls from out Centers at this point.
  • 7:51
Caspi looks like the cannibal leader at Terminus.
  • 7:52
collison went to the cp3 school of drawing fouls
  • 8:06
Frustrating that King's reserves are able to hang tight.
  • 8:08
hahaha.. Kings commentators just said Reggie was fun to watch.
The guy plays hard but he is NOT fun to watch
  • 8:09
Is Ramon Sessions the third best backup PG in the league behind Reggie Jackson and Isaiah Thomas?
  • 8:15
    Sessions is soooooo good
  • 8:15
LOL, we can't beat a team coming off a back to back at home.....
  • 8:17
omg and this whole thing has been without DMC and Gay, damn
  • 8:23
No Faried at Center please... not against DMC...
  • 8:24
Our team looks more gassed then theirs...lol
  • 8:27
    STOP PLAYING SMALL BALL
Good Lord Shaw, and you wonder why they keep scoring. WE HAVE NO RIM PROTECTION AND WE HAVE MISMATCHES ALL OVER THE FLOOR
  • 8:30 And thats game. Worst loss of the season. Shaw and his small ball cost us big time..
  • 8:34
this was one of the most pathetic things ive ever seen
  • 8:37
Wake me up when we're good
  • 8:43
14 FTs in a row for the Kings
    because of course
  • 8:52
    look on the bright side
Nuggs tickets will be dirt cheap
  • 8:54
Sac out rebounded us 50-42. That should not happen.
  • 9:22
The Pieces are not fitting for Nuggets
Look at what Sacramento is building—-they have a good nucleus with Cousins, Gay and Collison. Nuggets have 15 decent players.
  • 6:25
    What's frustrating about last night
is that the Nuggets let the Kings come into their gym and steal a game. Kings’ starters did not play well and their coach was able to give them extended rest on the bench in the 3rd and 4th quarter before the stretch run. The Nuggets could not take advantage. Credit Collison; he does bring much better on ball defense than dribble around and score IT.
  • 8:31
    Last nights attendance
    12,516 thats horrible

Tonight's Game

And thus ended Denver Nuggettes: The Musical

Hey, this team looks familiar.

After besting the Nuggets in Denver, the Sacramento Kings look to repeat the deed on the homecourt hardwood, this time hopefully well-rested and eager to built on our hot start prior to the schedule stretch from hell. Seriously, whoever decided to schedule the gauntlet for the Kings this early into the season needs to be fired or, at the very least, thrown down a deep, dark hole. Someone of us are trying to dream of the playoffs here!

Unless you weren't paying attention on Monday, you probably know more about what the Nuggets are going to do to win the game than I do since I was distracted by workstuff over the course of the game (Yes, I watch the games on International League Pass at work. Whatchu going to do about it?)

Brian Shaw's rotations are a mess. I'm too lazy to check but I'm pretty sure he used every person on his roster plus a couple janitors, one of the ballboys, and a bachelor party visiting from Colorado Springs. While Mike Malone isn't exactly Rick Adelman with his rotations either, you at least have the feeling that he'll at the very least find a way for Rudy and Cuz to get the ball down the stretch when it matters. Meanwhile in Denver, their crunch time strategy largely appears to be throwing junk balls at the rim and hoping some of the shots finally bounce in while there's enough time to get back in the thick of things.

I don't want to say that the Nuggets are mediocre but the only non-asterisk plus player (read: above average) on their roster is Ty Lawson and even he is in that second or third tier of point guards who aren't average but aren't all-stars either, regardless of what their fanbases think.

If our backcourt plays good defense yet again, our chances of extending the streak increase exponentially. Meanwhile, as long as the frontcourt doesn't lay a gigantic fat egg, they (well, mostly Demarcus) can largely steamroll their way to dominance against a bunch of guys who, while good, aren't exactly world-changing talents.

Also, Manimal has to be one of the dumbest (and only) nicknames in the modern NBA. The dude's 6'7" and playing power forward, if he wasn't fighting hard for rebounds and running the floor, he'd be pretty useless. Why not a more fitting nickname like "Try-Hard Guy" or "Sparky, the Wonder Midget"?

Things to do in Denver
The Denver Botanic Gardens are, according to their website and Google, a world-class garden. They also apparently offer Wi-fi, which is nice because lord knows I'd be completely lost without the ability to do some remote office work from the middle of a field of odd flowers from Zimbabwe.

No idea whether or not the botanic gardens offer a taste of Colorado's current most popular plant. (Brad Miller would probably know.)

Matchups
The bench versus falling back down a hole- You had one good performance. Let's follow it with another.

Shooting guards versus sucking-
You know, it really doesn't hurt to make a shot every once in a while.

The National Media versus us being predicted to suck- Suck it prognosticators!

Demarcus versus their many big men- Demarcus wins. Always. No offense to Mozgov, Dinkleberry, McGee, Janglepuss, and Scuttlebutt. He just does. It's a law of nature. Just like gravity. Or Amanda Bynes falling off the wagon.

Odd substitution patterns versus actually winning games- Mike Malone wins. This time.

Predictions and Final Thoughts
I don't want to get all overconfident and jazz but I really do think we can win this game. We're at home and rested, the home crowd should be rocking and momentum is on our side. Oh, and Rudy and Cuz will probably play more than half the game this time.

Therefore, I will continue to be Mister Happy-go-lucky and say the good guys prevail 97-88. Let's get this streak going!

Go Kings!!!!

PS
The Suns tried doing the old "Snake-in-the-water-cooler" maneuver. Here is the underwhelming result.
How could grown men, some of them making money to be "enforcers" be so afraid of snakes?

This is a must see for Kings fans. Sleep train is going to be something to behold. If I could do anything I wanted today I would go see this game at Sleep train.

This is a big game, a game that could solidify some legitimacy around here. I'm nervous for the first time this season. I expect Denver to come out a little pissed off too. If we are close at half time I'm picking us to win once again.

I like our odds. We beat em on the road with our two stars having bad games.

A fully rested Kings team should beat them at home.

Congrats to the view from the other side for calling out grant and Jerry for pushing the "Reggie Evans is fun to watch" narrative.

I like Reggie, but no. He might be the least skilled offensive player of all time.

Go Kings. The crowd should be worth at least +6-8 or so. That might be enough.

Yeah, he might be... if we only had two players in uniform.
Oh no, people badly underestimate my love of physical grr play and borderline disdain of chiffon wearing shooters and pretty boy look at me dunkers if they think I'm exaggerating. I would watch Dennis Rodman play any day of the week and twice on Sundays before I'd watch Ray Allen play. Such beautiful chaos. Fugly is the new beautiful.

We will be rested so I expect Cousins/Gay to go monster mode but in saying that I also expect Lawson/Ill Will/Gallo/AA to shoot better as well.
Reggie Evans might be the 2nd most fun to watch player on the Kings.
Could not agree more, the way he moves is hilarious just the way he does things is hilarious. Most human beings need air/water/food to stay alive Reggie just needs rebounds, you can't help but love that dude even with all his flaws he brings something different to the game of basketball that you virtually don't see at all anymore.

I like physical play just fine, I'm just not a fan of fake-tough "defenders," and that's what I think Reggie Evans is. He gets a lot of rebounds, and he's kind of a cheap shot artist, and a lot of people think that means he's a tough, physical defender. And he's really not.

Who on here has said he's a good defender? I think we all pretty much realize he's only good for rebounding the odd occasional dirty play/strip, I just like Reggie cause he's literally one of the least talented players in the NBA (if not the least) and the dude helps you win most the time and has throughout his entire NBA career.

Making him sound like Blake. Reggie is a brawler, he's gonna throw a haymaker and if it lands that's it, if not he's gonna fall on the floor.

He is relentless, best rebounder per minute arguably in the last 20 years.

Denver will come out with vengeance in mind. Pretty rare to see two poor performances by a team in a back to back vs the same team situation. These are the type of games we would lay eggs in in the past. Hopefully the guys come out and put up a pro performance and take care of business. The fact that we are a veteran team outside of SG gives me hope that "laying an egg" type performances are behind us.

We'll see. Watching them on Monday I was hit with an overwhelming sense of who were we supposed to be scared of on that roster again? You used to be scared of their pace as much as anything else. And while everybody was running and gunning they felt talented even after Melo left them. But watching them at this point...some of it is the disconnect with Shaw and apparently management. they still have him managing Karl's old team, except he doesn't want to play it like Karl did. So he's got no stars, no goto guys, a team that has to run to thrive, and he wants to slow it down and run the triangle.

I think much of tonight will depend on whether we can be mature, keep our noses to the grindstone, control pace, and get better games out of Cuz and Gay. Get silly, overconfident, sloppy, get in an up and down game, that's when you could get in trouble.

OK, I have been waiting for someone to mention Ray Allen. If the Kings success continues what does it take to get Ray Allen to sign here? Is there enough money available?

Even though its impossible not sure I want a disloyal self centered political locker room lawyer thrown into our all for one one for all mix.

What would it take? It would take LeBron James, that's what it would take. Ray Allen is not signing to play with a team that James is not playing on, unless he's dead certain that team can win a championship.
