Crime of the Day - Keep it light-hearted

What's the emergency?

What! He made how many 911 calls?

Fri Feb 15, 5:04 PM ET

HAYWARD, Calif. - Authorities have arrested a prolific 911 cell phone caller who is believed to have made more than 27,000 emergency calls, overwhelming California Highway Patrol and Hayward 911 systems.

The 911 calls started flooding in last May. The caller responded to emergency operators with bodily noises, muttering and pressing beep tones.

John Triplette was arrested Wednesday night for investigation of abusing the 911 emergency line, a misdemeanor.

Hayward officials say the 45-year-old man "completely overwhelmed our system" and delayed helping others with real emergencies.

The CHP communication center in Vallejo started getting bogus 911 calls last May, then the Hayward center began getting the calls in January.

Happy Valentine's Day. Not!

Fri Feb 15, 5:07 PM ET

NORTHGLENN, Colo. - Undercover police officers posing as flower deliverymen on Valentine' Day arrested 23 people with outstanding warrants.

The Northglenn officers used a van with a sign saying "Flower Delivery" and knocked on doors bearing a long-stem rose box to net their quarry.

"Hello there. Happy Valentine's Day," Officer Matt Hindman told one man wanted in this northern Denver suburb for failing to appear in court on a marijuana possession charge.

The man asked for a pen to sign for delivery. Hindman announced:

"Northglenn police undercover, OK? You've got a warrant for your arrest, OK?"

Handcuffed, the man, identified by police as Ronald Madden, chuckled as he told Channel 7 News he'd been fooled.

"Honestly it didn't click with me until I heard, 'Northglenn police' and then he pulled out the badge and I thought, 'Damn you guys are good,'" Madden said.

Boyfriend on roof punches weaving driver

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/02/24/car.brawl.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

HAVERSTRAW, New York (AP) -- A man fighting with his girlfriend clung to a car roof and punched her through the window as she drove more than a mile on a busy road, hitting several other cars, police said.
Both were hurt in the brawl Saturday and were arrested, police Sgt. Manfredo Figueroa said.
The man, William Kremer, apparently jumped onto the car and held on as girlfriend Stacey Sperrazza wove along Route 202 with the car's air bag inflated, police said. She eventually stopped the car and hit him with it, police said.
Sperrazza, 37, of Stony Point, was arrested on a felony charge of reckless endangerment. Kremer, 42, of Haverstraw, was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge.
No telephone numbers could be found for the two. Police had no immediate information early Sunday on whether they had lawyers.
He was treated for a foot injury, she for eye and head wounds, police said.

Chinese official resigns after dozing off at speech

Sat Feb 23, 1:46 PM ET

BEIJING (AFP) - An official in southwest China has resigned from his post after he was caught falling asleep on the job, but he has gotten some support for his plight from cyberspace, state media reported Saturday.

Jiang Wenhui stepped down as deputy director of the Chenggong County Investment Promotion Bureau of Yunnan Province on Friday following his snooze during an investment lecture on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency said.

The official, who sat in the first row, was told to wake up by a provincial leader.

On Chinese Internet portal Sina Corp., people debated Jiang's situation.

"It is he who needs to take notes at the investment lecture, but his dozing only showed he was not interested in his own job," one person said, Xinhua reported.

But others disagreed.

"Maybe the lecture was too dull," one wrote.

"Speakers at many meetings just say big and empty words. It is no wonder that listeners sleep," said another person who posted to Sina.

Chenggong county head Wu Qingkun said some local party members were sluggish in their work and he hoped Jiang's case would help to change that attitude.

Burglar's Map Leads to Buried Treasure Under Calif. Freeway

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,333389,00.html

LOS ANGELES — Just like on an old-fashioned pirate map, X marked the spot.
But instead of a desert island, police dug under a San Fernando Valley freeway underpass Tuesday, and the stash of jewelry recovered appears to be loot lifted by a convicted burglar.
An attorney for Roberto Caveda provided the hand-drawn map to detectives. It led them to the dirt of a California Department of Transportation right of way near the Ronald Reagan Freeway in Granada Hills.
With the roar of traffic as a backdrop, officers dug 12 to 14 inches down and found a 2-foot-long black plastic pipe, Detective Bill Schultz said.
Inside were socks stuffed with jewelry, including gold chains and necklaces, a jeweled bird pendant, diamond rings and Rolex watches.
Altogether, the haul might be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, police said.
One item in particular, a canary diamond ring, if real, could be worth as much as $400,000, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.
"My heart jumped out of my throat," Detective Bill Longacre said.
"It was like digging around in a cave and finding the pirate's treasure chest. But we can't keep it," he said with a chuckle.
Caveda, 30, was arrested in February 2006 for a series of local thefts that included a $10-million Degas painting and $2 million in jewelry, which were recovered.
He was convicted last year of 16 counts of burglary, receiving stolen property and attempted escape. He was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday and could get eight to 10 years in prison, police said.
Police suspected he committed at least 28 and possibly as many as 80 burglaries around Los Angeles and in local suburbs over 17 months beginning in late 2004.
Sometimes, he cleaned up after ransacking rooms so the thefts wouldn't be detected until later, police said.
Caveda melted down some precious metals into ingots that he sold to local jewelers, police said.
But much of the loot was stored.
"He kept it for up to two years, all of it," Longacre said. "He didn't fence it. He didn't need it for money. He did it for the thrill."
Caveda drew the map while being held at the downtown Twin Towers jail pending his sentencing.
The map included measurements in meters and how far down to dig.
"I was shocked," said his attorney, Mark Bledstein, who faxed the map to police. "I mean, to have a map like that and it's right there where the guy says it is?"
"He just felt it was the right thing to do," Bledstein said.
"He's been telling me how bad he felt after seeing all these old people testify (at his trial)."
Police now will catalog the jewelry and try to return it to the owners, investigators said.

Hapless robbers target biker meeting

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/02/28/biker.meeting/index.html

Two masked and machete-wielding men who barged into a club in Sydney, Australia, couldn't have picked a worse night for their robbery -- a monthly meeting of bikers.
About 50 burly bikers fought back with tables and chairs -- pretty much anything that wasn't bolted down. One would-be robber was tied up; the other in the hospital.
Police arrested both.
"These guys were absolutely dumb as bricks," Jerry Vancornewal, leader of the bikers, told CNN Thursday. "I can't believe they saw all the bikes parked up front and they were so stupid that they walked past in."
Vancornewal and his buddies were at the Regents Park Sporting and Community Club in Sydney when the two men wearing ski masks stormed in Wednesday night. They yelled at patrons to drop to the floor as they emptied cash registers at the bar.
Hearing the commotion from an adjacent room, Vancornewal and his pals with the Southern Cross Cruiser motorcycle club stomped through to the bar area to intervene.
"They (the robbers) thought they had the upper advantage with their knives and their machetes," Jim Webb, night supervisor of the club, told CNN. "They didn't expect to run into a bunch of guys carrying chairs and tables."
One of the would-be robbers crashed through a plate-glass door and jumped off a balcony.
"All he had to do was push the button and it automatically opened," Webb quipped.
New South Wales police said they arrested the 20-year-old man a short distance away.
The second man made a break for it through the club's service entrance, but the bikers tackled him near a neighbor's fence.
"We just grabbed him, crash-tackled him to the ground, hogtied him with electrical wire and left him for the cops," Vancornewal said.
Police confirmed in a statement that club patrons subdued the second man until officers arrived, but did not provide additional details. The suspect turned out to be a 16-year-old boy.
Both would-be robbers were charged with attempted armed robbery and "face disguised with intent to commit indictable offense," police said.
A third person, who was waiting in a getaway car, took off when the bikers threw pieces of furniture at him, Webb said. Police have not located him.
The Regents Park Sporting and Community Club is a place where locals come to enjoy drinks and take part in various games: cricket, soccer, lawn bowling. The biking enthusiasts meet there once a month to plan rides and other club activities.
In the last year or so, criminals have struck the club about 10 times, Webb said. And Wednesday night's incident, while unusual, wasn't the most memorable.
"We have these old bingo players and they are really serious about their games," Webb explained. "They do not like to be interrupted."
When robbers barged in one evening and announced that they were holding up the place, the players turned around and testily told them to be quiet.
"They were making it difficult for the players to hear the numbers being called," Webb said.

Minnesota Bars Skirt Smoking Ban by Declaring Patrons as 'Actors'

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,335771,00.html

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — All the world's a stage at some of Minnesota's bars.
A new state ban on smoking in restaurants and other nightspots contains an exception for performers in theatrical productions. So some bars are getting around the ban by printing up playbills, encouraging customers to come in costume, and pronouncing them "actors."
The customers are playing right along, merrily puffing away — and sometimes speaking in funny accents and doing a little improvisation, too.
The state Health Department is threatening to bring the curtain down on these sham productions. But for now, it's on with the show.

About 30 bars in Minnesota have been exploiting the loophole by staging the faux theater productions and pronouncing cigarettes props, according to an anti-smoking group.
"It's too bad they didn't put as much effort into protecting their employees from smoking," grumbled Jeanne Weigum, executive director of the Association for Nonsmokers.
The Health Department this week vowed to begin cracking down on theater nights with fines of as much as $10,000.
"The law was enacted to protect Minnesotans from the serious health effects of secondhand smoke," Minnesota Health Commissioner Sanne Magnan said. "It is time for the curtain to fall on these theatrics."

Driving Teacher Accused Of DUI While Giving Lesson

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/15513835/detail.html

IPSWICH, Mass. -- A driving instructor accused of being drunk while teaching a lesson in Ipswich pleaded not guilty on Thursday.

Essex District Attorney's Office said Daniel Winsky, 52, of Salem, was under the influence of liquor while teaching two students to drive on Dec. 26, 2007.

A portable Breathalyzer test administered after the car was stopped by police showed Winsky had a blood-alcohol level of .223, nearly three times the Massachusetts legal limit of .08, police said. But those results are not admissible in court. Since police did not arrest Winsky immediately, they did not offer him a formal Breathalyzer test at the station.

"He is not guilty. He did nothing wrong and we will be taking this to trial," defense attorney John Morris said.

Police stopped the vehicle on High Street after a clerk at Cumberland Farms and a customer called them saying the man smelled of alcohol. The clerk's sister was killed by a drunken driver in 2003; and the customer's fiancé was killed by a drunken driver, according to police reports.

Students in the car said Winsky didn't appear to be intoxicated, but was sipping a bottle of cough medicine, court documents said.

"I think it is more mouthwash than the Robitussen. They didn't arrest him at the scene. He did perform some field sobriety tests. The ones he did perform, he passed -- all but the portable Breathalyzer," Morris said.

Winsky wasn't driving the car, but driving instructors have a brake on the passenger side.

"Mr. Winsky had reached over to the driver's side and helped the young person who was operating the car as part of the driver's ed instruction, pulled to the side of the road, so, therefore, exerting control over the motor vehicle," said prosecutor Kate Hartigan.

Winsky pleaded not guilty in Ipswich District Court in Newburyport on a drunken driving charge and was released on personal recognizance. Winsky will return to court on April 24.

Since he did not refuse a Breathalyzer test, Winsky is still allowed to drive while the case is pending, but cannot teach driving lessons.

Sheriff suggests charge after woman stuck to toilet

WICHITA (AP) — A sheriff in Kansas is recommending charges in the case of a woman who sat on her boyfriend's toilet for so long that her body became stuck to the seat.

Sheriff Bryan Whipple says he has asked the Ness County attorney to file charges against the boyfriend for mistreatment of a dependent adult.

The sheriff says it appeared the Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat in the two years she apparently was in the bathroom.

Kory McFarren says he did nothing wrong because his girlfriend had a phobia about leaving the bathroom.

The 35-year-old woman initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

Police declined to release the couple's names, but the boyfriend, Kory McFarren, agreed to be interviewed Wednesday by The Associated Press. He identified his girlfriend as Pam Babcock.

McFarren, 36, told investigators he took Babcock food and water and asked her every day to come out of the bathroom.

"And her reply would be, 'Maybe tomorrow,"' Whipple said. "According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom."

McFarren told the AP that he wasn't to blame, and that it was solely Babcock's choice to remain in the bathroom.

"She is an adult; she made her own decision. It was my fault I should have gotten help for her sooner; I admit that. But after a while, you kind of get used to it," McFarren said.

Although authorities said they think Babcock was in the bathroom for two years, McFarren said he wasn't certain how long she stayed there. He said she had a phobia about leaving the room because of childhood beatings.

"It just kind of happened one day. She went in and had been in there a little while, the next time it was a little longer. Then she got it in her head she was going to stay — like it was a safe place for her," McFarren said.

But McFarren said Babcock moved around in the bathroom during that time, bathed and changed into the clothes he brought her. He said they conversed and had an otherwise normal relationship — except that it all happened in the bathroom.

McFarren, who works at an antique store, said he has been taking care of Babcock for the 16 years they have lived together.

McFarren called police on Feb. 27 to report that "there was something wrong with his girlfriend," Whipple said.

Police found Babcock clothed and sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to her mid-thigh. She was "somewhat disoriented," and her legs looked as if they had atrophied, Whipple said.

"She said that she didn't need any help, that she was OK and did not want to leave," he said.

She was reported in fair condition at a hospital in Wichita, about 150 miles southeast of Ness City. Whipple said she refused to cooperate with medical providers or law enforcement investigators.

McFarren said that his girlfriend has an infection in her legs that has damaged her nerves, and that she has no feeling in her legs. She may wind up in a wheelchair, he said.

Authorities said they did not know whether she was mentally or physically disabled.

The case has been the buzz of Ness City, said James Ellis, a neighbor.
"I don't think anybody can make any sense out of it," he said.

Ellis said he had known the woman since she was a child but that he had not seen her for at least six years.

He said she had a tough childhood after her mother died at a young age and apparently was usually kept inside the house as she grew up. At one time the woman worked for a long-term care facility, he said, but he did not know what kind of work she did there.

"It really doesn't surprise me," Ellis said. "What surprises me is somebody wasn't called in a bit earlier."

Law officers chase down stolen donut truck

http://www.wcfcourier.com/articles/2008/03/20/news/breaking_news/doc47e2e4a0f237a752489830.txt

TOLEDO — A stolen van loaded down with donuts may not be the best vehicle for eluding police.

Frank Alvarado, 46, of Moline, Ill., found that out the hard way Thursday morning after leading nine officers from four different agencies in a high-speed chase through Benton and Tama counties.

Alvarado boosted the van, owned by Donut Delite Ltd. of Moline, around 5 a.m. when a delivery driver was making a stop at the Rock Island Hospital. He got as far as Benton County when a sheriff’s deputy spotted him heading west on Highway 30, according to the Tama County Attorney’s Office.

The deputy was soon joined by two more sheriff’s cars and a Belle Plaine city officer in the chase, which reached speeds of up to 100 mph, the attorney’s office said.

“What strikes me as a bit out of the ordinary in this case is the number of officers who were able to respond,” said Rich Vander Mey, assistant Tama County Attorney. “I don’t know whether the fact that the stolen vehicle contained donuts has anything to do with that.”

Five Tama County sheriff’s deputies joined the chase as it entered their jurisdiction. One deputy attempted to disable the van with a spike strip shortly after it entered into Tama County, but Alvarado drove around the strip.

The chase ended around 10:30 a.m. at the Hardee’s restaurant parking lot when Tama County Dep. Chad Hansen rammed the van’s driver side door. Alvarado was taken into custody without incident, the attorney’s office said.

Four additional officers from three other agencies showed up, one of which drove his personal vehicle, the attorney’s office said.

Sharon Wainwright, manager of Delite Donuts, said the bakery donated their goods to the officers involved in the chase.

“They probably deserved it,” Wainwright said.

She said she was a bit surprised to hear the van made it all the way to Tama County before it was stopped. It was also a bit of a shock to hear it was found so quickly.

She said this is the first time a van has been stolen while on a route. The driver of the van had around 50 stops to make on his morning route when the van was nabbed. Wainwright said the driver only had four stops left, but there was still a lot left in the van.

Alvarado was charged with first-degree theft, a Class C felony; eluding police officers, a Class D felony; and numerous traffic violations.

Teen's Underwear Dance at McDonald's Leads to Robbery, Assault Arrest

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,342608,00.html

YONKERS, N.Y. — Police say four teenagers have been arrested in a bizarre assault and robbery that began with one of them dancing in his underwear behind a Yonkers fast-food restaurant counter while another videotaped him.
Police Capt. Daniel Daly says the suspects told investigators they were "only clowning around" at the Central Park Avenue McDonald's on Wednesday, but the violence was no joke.
Police say the teens punched and kicked a manager when he tried to stop them, and then beat up another employee who tried to intervene. Police say the suspects also took a worker's wallet.
One of the teens was arrested on robbery and assault charges, and the rest on assault charges.
A message left at the McDonald's early Friday wasn't immediately returned.

OAKLAND, Calif. - A woman is safe after losing control of her car and accidently driving into the waters of the Oakland Estuary. But on the upside, she saved her morning coffee.

Authorities say the car went into the water a little after 6 a.m. Thursday after its 22-year-old driver apparently lost control of her car while reaching for a cell phone.

After the car became lodged in stilts under a home on the water, the driver was able to get out of the car and make it back to shore.

Onlookers say she came ashore still cradling her coffee cup.

Nun Pleads Guilty to Taking Archdiocese Money, Using It to Gamble

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,344216,00.html

OMAHA, Neb. — A Roman Catholic nun accused of taking more than $250,000 from the Archdiocese of Omaha and gambling much of it away has pleaded guilty to theft.
Sister Barbara Markey entered the plea to a charge of theft of more than $1,500 on Monday in Douglas County District Court, according to her attorney, J. William Gallup. She also agreed to pay $125,000 in restitution to the archdiocese.
In exchange, Gallup said, the state and the archdiocese agreed not to object to probation for the 73-year-old Markey. Her sentencing is set for July, and she faces up to 20 years in prison.
Markey, a nationally and internationally known speaker, was fired in January 2006 as director of the archdiocese's Family Life Office, after an archdiocese audit turned up irregularities.
According to the audit, Markey spent $307,545 for her own use or without documentation between December 2003 and January 2006.
Prosecutors have said Markey used the archdiocese money to cover gambling forays, gifts and trips.

Reading man falls from roof of his moving minivan, runs naked along bypass

http://www.readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=86959

A Reading man climbed atop a moving minivan Friday on the West Shore Bypass, stood on the roof and rode the vehicle until it crashed and catapulted him into the woods, West Reading police reported.

Witnesses told police that the man then climbed up an embankment, stripped naked and ran several hundred yards down the busy highway bleeding from a foot-long gash in his side.

"I’ve never seen anything like this in 22 years," West Reading police Detective Joseph M. Brown said of the 3 p.m. incident. "It is not a common call we get as police."

Police responding to calls from frantic motorists used three separate jolts from a Taser and pepper spray to subdue the nude man.

The Taser had no effect, and police eventually tackled the 38-year-old from Reading, Brown said.

He was taken to Reading Hospital, police said. The hospital listed him in critical condition Friday night.

Witnesses driving on the West Shore Bypass, or Route 422, saw the driver of the minivan climb out the driver’s side window and onto the roof. The vehicle swerved and crashed into a concrete median.

The impact sent the vehicle back across the westbound lanes, and the man was thrown down a wooded embankment. Witnesses told police they thought
the victim had been killed.

"They were shocked when he got back onto the road," Brown said, adding that the man had a foot-long gash in one side and his internal organs were exposed.

Reports: Naomi Campbell Banned From British Airways

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,347948,00.html

Naomi Campbell has been banned from flying British Airways after her arrest last week at Heathrow Airport, according to reports.
The 37-year-old model, who had a spat with a police officer after one of her bags was lost last week in Terminal 5 of the British airport, hoped the dispute with the airline could be resolved "amicably," Reuters reported.
British Airways declined to comment on Campbell's case, but according to Reuters said: "all incidents of abuse against passengers or staff are taken extremely seriously by BA and will not be tolerated. We deal with cases on an individual basis and will take whatever action we feel is necessary."
Campbell's spokeswoman hoped for the best.
"Naomi has been flying with British Airways for nearly 30 years and has been a good customer," she said, according to Reuters. "She hopes this can be resolved amicably."
The London-born supermodel was arrested April 3 on suspicion of assaulting an officer after police were called to a disturbance at the airport. Since Terminal 5 opened last month, more than 28,000 bags have been separated from their owners.

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — Police used a stun gun to subdue two people at a wedding reception after a ruckus erupted over the band.
The bride, the groom and the couple's daughter were arrested at Saturday's Westchester County event, according to police officials. Police subdued the groom and the daughter.
Port Chester Police Lt. James Ladeairous said department guidelines allow officers to use a Taser stun gun when they can't otherwise get control of a suspect.
The 21-year-old daughter and her father were left with bruises, said the daughter. Both were arrested on misdemeanor charges, while the bride faces a felony criminal mischief charge. The couple was legally married 22 years ago but had a long-delayed church wedding Saturday, according to the daughter.

Parents Fight Over Which Gang Toddler Should Join

Just.....wow.

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/15851207/detail.html

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A couple fighting about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday.

On Saturday, Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where his girlfriend worked, threatened to kill her and knocked over several video displays and even a computer, Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said.

After he ran out of the store, police were called and the 19-year-old was arrested at his home.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, is a member of the Crips. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Manzanares was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment, and domestic violence. He was transported to the Adams County Detention Facility.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a year of probation. The misdemeanor harassment charge was dropped.

Apparently being from different gangs doesn't stop you from hopping in the sack, just causes family fights later.

Well, now we know what would have happened to Tony and Maria, if Tony hadn't been shot by Chino. (Or if Romeo and Juliet had married.) To be or not to be......a Montague or Capulet...a Jet or a Shark? :p

Warhawk, now you're sneaking in my backyard. ;)

Man Accused of Handcuffing New Bride in Dog Cage

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351259,00.html

A man is accused of handcuffing his wife inside a dog cage days after they were married in Las Vegas.

Canton police Lt. Greg Boudreaux says 28-year-old Matthew George also fired gunshots inside the home. His wife, Mary Swihart, was not injured.

George was found in a car pulled to the side of the road early Sunday in neighboring Springfield Township. Boudreaux says George had taken a large number of pills and was hospitalized at Akron City Hospital.

A spokeswoman says George wasn't at the hospital Monday.

Boudreaux says charges of abduction, assault and domestic violence are pending.
