"Classic" Ride Draft Thread - DRAFT COMPLETED!

Okay, I had this idea and it's still kind of rough around the edges but if people are interested, I can go ahead and write up the rules, based on those of the Tropical Island and Desert Island drafts already underway.

I decided on "last person in the big city" instead of tropical island or desert island for the simple reason having a classic car and not being able to drive it because of all the crappy sand would suck.

The idea is to pick your all-time favorite cars. It would be year, make and model. Variations in engines, colors, etc. would not be considered separate entities for draft purposes.

If you're interested, sign up here along with any suggested rule variations.

Va-room! Va-room!!

RULES:

You wake up one morning and find yourself alone. You're in a large city with all the resources you'll need to live out your life. As you bemoan your fate, it suddenly dawns on you: You can now drive ANY car you want! You don't have to worry about gas prices or availability. For some reason, the power is still on in your city so you have all the conveniences but no worries about traffic, speed limits, or other silly restrictions. And, miracle of miracles, if you select a particular car, you have the keys!

Here are the rules:

• 20 rounds (serpentine).
• PM the next person promptly.
• Must post a brief write-up on your selection and why you chose it.
• It's pretty much "pick a car, any car" - as non-restrictive as possible. If someone protests a particular pick, the issue will be resolved at that time.
• 24 hour deadline between picks - same as all the other drafts.
• Winner of the draft will be determined by a vote based on whatever criteria the voters deem appropriate. Faster is not necessarily the only option. Durability, coolness, etc. might well factor in... or not.

DRAFT ORDER:

Okay let me first say I am not going to join this draft, but I do maybe want to try to give you a better name for it.

How about Post-Apocalyptic City Hot Rod Draft ?

I thought this was like a 20th century amusement park ride/roller coaster draft when I went into it. Now that I might be interested in :p

I'm a tentative yes on this, but need to try and figure out if I've got enough cars/alternates before fully committing.
That was my concern, too. I figured if things got too dicey, we could shorten the draft somewhat.

Will one off custom cars be allowed?
Uh-oh. My first technical question. :p

What are you thinking of? I was thinking of cars as they come off the line or out of the showroom. If we're limiting it to year, make and model then variances wouldn't come into play.

For example, once I pick the 1937 Vlade Deluxe you could not select the 1937 Vlade Deluxe with optional Hemi and footpedals.

;)

I was meaning, could we say pick the Batmobile?

And while I agree that we shouldn't make distinctions between say a V8 and a V6 variant of the same year and model, something truly special like a Shelby or Yenko version of that model year car should be allowable.

Oh, and btw, while the hemispherical combustion chamber debuted in cars around 1908, Chrysler didn't trademark and market the term Hemi until the 1960s.

Was that the Vlade Deluxe SS Edition with the windshield wipers, or the one with the fan belt made from recycled rubber?

BTW, I'm in, for no other reason than I've got nothing better to do. I might be toast after the first round. :D

Hmm...

I've been joining all these things because, well a) I check the board several times a day anyway, so its not really much of a burden; b) its fun; and c) its actually a great way to learn about the particular topic, both by researching your own picks, and looking up others', but damn...am not sure if I have the depth of knowledge (or at least preference) here to hang in this sort of draft. My dad was a car guy. My youngest brother is a car guy. But while I absorbed a certain amount of car knowledge from my dad, my interests ran elsewhere.

Maybe if everybody agrees to just let me get every pick I want... :p

Also can we pick cars that were in movies. (ie. the batmobile)
My initial response, which people can argue with of course, is no. There are a LOT of cars that are readily identifiable as certain makes and models partially because of their introduction in movies or TV. I'd think it would be one or the other. I can't go into specifics without revealing at least one of my proposed picks, but I'll return to the 1937 Vlade Deluxe example. If I pick the Vlade Deluxe, then you cannot pick the special Vlade Deluxe that he drove in the commercial with Peja.

But this is open to debate/discussion from other thread participants. It might work if the car was so unique that it transcends the original make and model, such as the Batmobile.

I do think this will most likely only go about 10 rounds at the most. And then the fleet can be judged on speed, endurance, attraction of the opposite sex, etc.

Give me some ideas. Just keep your hands off the Vlade Deluxe.

IMHO if a car is so unique that its name transcends that of the actual make/model of the car it should be allowable. I can PM you lists of hundreds of examples. This would allow a few barely customized cars with iconic paint jobs to squeak in but prevent things like your fictitious example or someone picking a James Bond car that is otherwise identical to its production model.

More importantly, I think this would allow more people (those who are not car-savvy) to participate and also allow it to go a full 20 rounds. I think this should go the full 20.

I haven't started putting together an actual list yet, but have had enough potentials pop into my head this afternoon to go ahead and remove the "tentative" -- I'm in.

Just another clarifying question:

If you pick the 1937 Vlade Deluxe, am I able to pick the 1939 Vlade Deluxe, or is a model gone once it's gone?

That is my understanding - VF said year, make and model originally. Plus custom cars that are recognizable by a name (so "Batmobile" is ok, James Bond's BMW is a no) and concept cars.

Still not sure if specialty tuned variants like Shelby or Yenko count as their own models, to be honest I probably won't be picking any of those so someone else will have to plead their case if that's their thing.

You can TRY and pick the 1939 Vlade Deluxe, but if I'm picking ahead of you, they'll both probably be gone.

Different years are different cars as any true car buff will tell you. After all, with the Marlboro tire cover on the back, who couldn't tell a '39 Vlade from a '37 Vlade?

:p
