Kings offense

I'm not sure. It's preseason so it's hard to gauge. It could be something they're struggling with so maybe Joerger is having them go back to it constantly for practice. Could also be the offense that Joerger is trying to implement for the season. I'm hoping it's the former and not the latter. I mean, it's something that needs to be worked out because it's a part of every teams offensive game plan but it's also one of the main reasons why the Kings can't even break 85 points the last couple games. It seems like it has about a 20% success rate at the moment. The pick and roll and drive and dish have been much more effective.

In the pre-season, it is a good idea to try a lot of different combinations of players, and some different offensive formats. The offense has looked terrible, but that is partly because the bench has been emptied and everyone has gotten some minutes. So far the Kings' don't set a lot of picks in any format, and they do not move without the ball very well. I am waiting to see a pick and roll quarter and see how it stacks up compared to what we have seen so far. Coach J knows what he is doing even if he is feeling his way. If there is one thing I would be trying to inject in the current group it would be confidence. Every young player needs more of it, but so do guys on the back side of their careers like Vince and Zack. One hundred points seems out of reach so far, but that is going to change soon.

I like the idea of Willie in the high post. I think he showed enough as a passer there for that to be explored further. I'd like to see a better effort in getting him some easy SET jumpers in that 17-19 area. The issue I see is they stick Willie in the high post and another big in the low post at the same time. This completely closes up any and all passing lanes for the guards and thus they are struggling. They only thing they seem to be focused on for the wings right now is a quick curl action to the top of the key or 3 point line. Due to the spacing issues defenses are just cheating around that screen so 9 times out of 10 it leads to no open look. Until the timing is there for the players I don't think we can judge the offensive scheme Joerger is attempting to run.

Kings offense will be tough to watch if preseason is any indication. Having these bigs who can't shoot catch from the high post is not a recipe for long term success IMO but I won't criticize Joerger because he is a quality head coach and I hope that as the season prolongs, he will make adjustments and put his players in situations where they can hone their strengths. The first step is putting out a starting unit out there that can play together and make plays for one another and not individually.

What is the rational behind sticking with the high post offensive sets? Is there a big advantage to it that im not aware of?
If your intent is to run a motion offense, which is probably where the Kings are headed, it's easier, or perhaps I should say, effective to do that out of the high post. It helps open up driving and passing lanes, instead of clogging them up by planting a center or a PF in the lane. The Kings ran a high post offense back when Webber was on the team. The idea is to do your best to spread the floor. Of course it helps if you have players that are good passers and good shooters. That's yet to be determined.

Joerger teams start slow historically so I imagine this team will be no different with the all the changes and the short pre-season. That said I think we have the makings of a really fun offense with the athleticism and versatility of our bigs and the basketball IQ of our perimeter guys.

To be honest, it looked to me like their running a very similar offense to Kentuckys, which is a motion offense that they call the dribble drive offense. In that offense the ball goes into the highpost player (Willie), who then sets a screen for a guard, and hands him the ball as he passes by. The guard then drives into the lane trying to disrupt the defense. He can either go to the basket, pass the ball to an open man, or kick the ball back to Willie who then repeats the play. Obviously you can run the P&R out of that offense as well.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but this is a very very young team with some players on it that have never played in the NBA. I don't know about you, but my expectations right now are extremely low. It's going to take at least half a season before these guys get totally comfortable with each other. Of course it's frustrating to watch at times, but keep reminding yourself, it will get better. It's probably better to try and appease yourself with individual performances rather than team continuity. There are going to be some ugly moments along the way, but eventually, I think, I hope, I pray, it will become worth it.

I sort of liken this team to what Kentucky or Duke etc. look like almost every year because of the one and done players that go through every year. Those teams basically start from scratch every year, and they always look a little rough at the beginning of every year. But by the time the tournament rolls around, they somehow manage to get a bunch of 18 and 19 year old's with big ego's to play together. It's not as easy that they make it look, but it's the price you have to pay for the top talent now.

That's an apt comparison. While we're not starting from scratch completely, our PGs are new to this system and rookies and when that is the case things take time. I love the way our talent seems to compliment itself, it will take time for them to mesh and realize that talent though.

The dribble drive is what Karl tried to run with Cuz. The issue is if they are running dribble drive then they aren't playing the most effective version which is a 4 out set. Unless the players wires are really getting crossed somewhere.

It's a young team but in terms of age and experience it's not exactly that young. Most of the Kings main youth pieces are in their mid 20's already. That along with the vets could mean trouble if it takes too long to find some sort of identity.

I'd love to hear a Ham or some insider interview joeger about the offense philosophy and WHY he thinks it is the best fit longterm for the personell. Same question for the defensive scheme. Joeger has said many time he is all about picking a system that fits the personel insteaf of forcing ill fitting pieces into "his" scheme. I'm not arguing in anyway that his schemes are wrong. Rather, im really interested in the REASONS that he thinks these schemes best fit the playerys. What does he see about the different players now and projected long term development that he envisions with this offense and defense?

Warriors game showed great improvement on offense. Much better moving without the ball. Kings' guards are the strongest group and can create for everyone else.
