Free Agency Open Thread (NBA and Kings!)

Staggeringly inaccurate. The more capable teammates you have around you the easier it is to experience collective success. As a rookie or a second year player with teammates who have been there and done that (Otto, Iggy, etc) this means you are less likely to be asked to do something outside of your current skill set. You are not required to play extended minutes while being overmatched because there are no better options. You are not set up to fail. You are not asked to carry the offense because there are no experienced teammates to share scoring burden draw doubles and help run efficient play sets.

You are not left on the floor when you are 1 for 7 FGs because instead of having a competent veteran to sub in you have a D-League just as wet behind the ears. It is simple. You want to be around guys who can accelerate your learning curve. You want to go to battle with fighters who have been in the trenches. This allows the relative newbie to assume more responsibility as the coach deems him ready, as the player capitalizes on opportunity given to him and shows he is capable of more. The leash is extended based on merit not necessity. This is why 76ers went out and signed Amir and JJ Reddick. Great signings! Fultz and Simmons couldn't even win in college.

The hype surrounding those two may prove justified or not. When I saw Embiid play the first time I knew that guy was the real deal. He was amazing securing deep low post position and challenging shots far better than Boogie ever did. I thought Simmons was mostly bad in Summer League last year after terrible finish to his college career. He won't even play summer league this year. Sad! As far as Fultz goes, his play could not rally his teammates to more than 8 wins, nor gain the trust of a pretty good GM (Danny Ainge). For his sake, I hope his force and will on the court is stronger than his personality. Unlike our man De'Aaron Fox, Fultz has NO natural leadership skills. Bringing in vets Reddick and Amir are EXACTLY what Fultz and Simmons need. Our front office needs to take the lead from what the 76er did today.
Well its hard to say wich one of us is right since it would be hard to find any statistical data, so I would guess it depends on a player. But the two things that concern me about signing vets is flexibility and our draft position. Alltough Kings reportedly offered Iggy only two years wich is a good sign. If Kings see the vets as a must, then it should be only one year deals so we can get better vets next year if we can get a good draft pick.

But we cant do precisely what sixers did since we are not in the same position in our rebuilds. One year deals yes but preferably to guys who wont be too good to take unnecessary minutes away from kids and doesnt get us too many wins.

Well this isn't a the new NBA. It started last year with the huge contracts. We avoided it by already having Rudy and cuz. We have to face it. For true starter talent it takes 15 mil anybody above that level it rises

What would be great is if we could do a 4 year 100 mil. But start it high and go down. Like 35-28-22-15. Maybe he would like the big payday year 1. Then if things don't work out. His contract becomes more trade able after the first 2 seasons. This could possibly be the only year we can front load a contract like that

That type contract isn't allowed. I believe decreases in salary is restricted the same as increases.

You are correct. You can decrease or increase by maximum of 7.5%. So you can do it. Would have to be 28 to start decreasing to like 23. So not much of a difference. But if we do sign to 25 a year. We still have 25 left in space.

I think bogdanovic number needs another 3 mill added but still 46 still avail porter at 25 Lawson at 5 and still 5 mil for pf and we are close to floor

I'm still confused by Washingtons angle. Is it just a last ditch hope that he isn't offered the max or are they waiting to see the amount of years they have to match? Maybe that's important. They must know either the Kings or Brooklyn would shell out the max.

I doubt they would say they'll match if they didn't attend to. Maybe they just wanted to keep a sign and trade scenario open...or maybe hoping Porter signs a shorter term contract elsewhere and they match. Maybe waiting to see which team?

Signing Porter to the max would likely kill the Wizards flexibility for years to come.

If we signed Otto Porter Jr, what would it mean for Justin Jackson? They're only 2 years apart. Porter Jr is 24, JJ is 22. I could see JJ turn into a Porter Jr-type player in 2 years. Neither player could play small ball 4, but they can play SG..but we already have 4 other SGs lol

It means we don't have to wait 3-4 years to see if Jackson might make it to the level Porter is at now (personally I have my doubts). Jackson could still get decent time (~15 mins a night) off the bench and if he's ready to replace Porter after a few years, well happy days. I'm not sure what the downside is?

Well in two years if JJ pans out and porter stays on path. It's called an asset you can trade for another position of need. Same with all of our sg's.

To create adequate space, Toronto in discussions with Indiana on trading Cory Joseph, league sources tell ESPN. @Michael Scotto first.

Joseph will make $7.7M next season, the final year of his contract. Would be a big opportunity for Delon Wright and Fred VanVleet in Toronto twitter.com/ChrisBHaynes/s

What does this have to do with kings. Unless you are also an Indiana fan

You know who would be better than "somebody like Lawson"......Lawson! I certainly however am not going to be disappointed we missed out on Tucker for 4/32 to HOU. Pffft.... Rockets can have him. This puts us as frontrunners for Jon Simmons....and possibly going after Otto....something needs to break in the next 24-48 hours....if not then I will join you in WTF state of mind.
Your Lawson reference was the point I was trying to make. If we could land Porter, I don't care who else we get. Hell, re-sign Benny Mac. Porter is the one guy who fits in perfectly with what we are trying to do here.

Agreed. Low key starting PG. Can play both guard spots. Some SAS experience. Nice size for a PG. Sounds like a guy we should be interested in. Good enough to start in Fox's rookie season and used to be a bench player, so if Fox pans out, it would be not a huge deal for him to take the backseat. I would take Joseph over Lawson.

Washington's owner is notoriously cheap. He probably doesn't want to have 3 max players. I think he is bluffing on matching.

He may want a sign and trade? So he can get some cheaper assets or draft picks. I say we call their bluff and give Porter the max and see what they do.
