Collins is more physical and plays with a bit of a mean streak.
I like Collins a lot more than Hawes (man I wanted Joakim Noah that draft) but there are some similarities.

A center with very good offensive understanding with developed moves ... Has a sweet offensive repertoire with hooks and drop steps ...A tough nosed player with great attitude ... Has the ability to use either hand inside with very good touch ... Has a good frame with long arms and excellent hands ... Competitive and very coachable ... Good passer ... Hard worker whose game has improved leaps and bounds in a short time ... Good athlete, gets up and down the floor well ...

Glad to see I'm on the same page as NBA scouts :)

@206Fan I'm almost glad he didn't start this season or he would have been in the conversation as a top 5 pick rather than a late lottery guy. And we saw in the tournament how damn effective he was when he started to get extended burn.

I just don't see any weakness in his game that leads me to believe he won't at minimum be a very good starter. He gets foul prone and he's not a good playmaker. That's literally it. He rebounds on both ends, he'll be able to stretch the floor with his shooting, he has ridiculously advanced footwork for a 19 year old big man, he has outstanding rim protection skills/instincts, he works his butt off on both ends of the court, he already has a well-built frame at 19 and isn't a twig (can get better obviously), he's an excellent athlete that will give him the ability to switch and cover the perimeter.

I wonder what I'm seeing that most other draft guys aren't to not have him as a lock top 10 player in the draft.
I think some people are going to be surprised by Collins, and I don't think your alone in your judgement.

I wonder if part of my resistance to Collins is that I see some resemblance to Spencer Hawes in his game.
Wow, I don't think they're anything alike. The knock on Hawes was that he played soft. He wasn't a shotblocker, nor a particularly good rebounder. The only comparison might be that both Hawes and Collins are considered very skilled for the center position. But they play nothing alike. Collins plays with an edge. Sometimes with too much of an edge which gets him into foul trouble. He per 40 block rate is 4.2 and his per 40 rebound rate is around 14 boards. Hawes played more away from the basket than Collins and was a better passer.

Despite the skill comparison, Hawes has always been considered a finesse player, while Collins is a more physical player with good touch around the basket.

Actually he would make sense for the Wolves. He's a good defender, and he would allow Towns to play away from the basket more.
He also has the lateral quicks to ICE the pick and roll and if Towns does go into the post Collins can space the floor.

Here's my hope:

  1. PHI - Fultz
  2. LAL - Ball
  3. BOS - Jackson
  4. PHX - Isaac
  5. SAC - Fox
  6. ORL - Smith
  7. MIN - Collins
  8. NYK - Monk
  9. DAL - Ntilikina
  10. SAC - Tatum

I'm such a fan of his that it wouldn't be a disappointment or a surprise for me to take him at 5, and work the details out from there. Just IMO of his talent and BPA

Although I strongly doubt that will be what the team does.

Tatum is more likely to go 3rd to the C's than drop to 10th.

I'm with you on that hope though. That'd be an A+ haul.

Glad you said this before I was going to. If Jackson/Fox/Ball/Fultz are all gone before 5, I think I would take Collins ahead of Tatum/Isaac/DSJ. Value wise, it's bad because I do think there's a good chance we can get him at 10, but he's ahead of DSJ/Monk/Tatum/Isaac on my big board.

Yeah, I've been thinking the Celts like Tatum.

It didn't make any sense that Ainge would gamble on the Lakers not taking Jackson. Unless Jackson isn't their target.

That'd be good news for the Kings landing Fox. It would mean Ball or Jackson would be available at 4 and I think the Suns would take either over Fox.

If be a happy camper if we got fox and Tatum but looking at your list, it would be a miracle that he's there past 4. :p

Collins seems like a Thibs pick at 7.
Funny you mentioned this as I was thinking the exact same thing. It would not surprise me if Thibs is after this kid either at 7 or trading down to get him. While Lauri is a good fit, I think Collins might offer more next to KAT. Can play inside, shoot from mid range or from the 3pt range, rebounds well and provides some good shot blocking down there. He fits nicely as a better overall player next to KAT than Markkanen who at this stage just provides great long range shooting.

I'm completely on board with Collins at 10. Definitely prefer him over Markannen who I wouldn't even take in the teens.

I know we'd have a lot of bigs, but I would still keep KK around if we did go this route. There should be no rush to trade him, he's a solid vet on a good contract and would be an excellent mentor to all the youngsters. Maybe at the trade deadline, or next summer, if we get a good deal I can see him being moved, but not before.
