The art and agony of the tank (split from game thread)

Tanking is tough against bad teams right now.

We don't really have any stars to sit and while it seems odd, our roster is semi talented all the way down to the last guy on the bench. Much more so than most teams. So if a team like the Mavericks end up sitting Nowitzki, Matthews and Curry....all the sudden were the better team because the guys at the end of their bench aren't nearly as good as the guys at the end of ours. Basically Joerger can't really tank unless he just plays everyone out of position because he's certainly not going to tell these guys to go out there and half ass it.

Add to this, the Kings' rookies have fresh legs, so they are also able to hold their own against some of the low tier playoff teams.

They were crushed by New Orleans. Run out that lineup rather than the lineup that was in control for the whole night against Dallas.

It angers me to see New York and Minnesota below us in lottery standings. Straight TRASH teams. I can't even look at mock drafts anymore because of those two teams.

I'm not sure when it happened, but all of this turned from driving me nuts to making me laugh. (It might be the insanity finally taking over...) At this point, I'm more of an observer in this game of life than a participant. Que sera sera - as I said in another thread.

Looking at the games tonight, I think our lotto position is about to get ****'d!

Ah well.
Yeah, NY, Detroit, Dallas, Minnesota all playing teams they should easily lose to. Denver still has incentive to win at home against NO which could help our NO pick. As I've mentioned elsewhere the Lakers may play to win because they are at home, and are almost a sure lock for the 3rd worse record regardless if they win or lose. Suns almost certainly have that 2nd spot locked in.

Side note for those who care, ESPN just put out their play lotto site. On my 2nd try NO jumped into the top 3 and we got pushed back 10.

I'm figuring on 9 (Kings) & 10 (Pels), and any better than that will be icing on the cake. But if it turns out be 9 & 10 the mocks I've looked at have terrific players there and I'm happy. The tankathon.com mock even has us getting Jordan Bell from Oregon with pick #35. That along with one of the PGs and Miles Bridges... very good.

But you know what I'm starting to worry about... who is the Paps of 2017? Who will Vlade pick at #9 to jerk everybody's mind around? If he sticks with the consensus top 10 it's cool but what if he loves Markkanen??? This place (and twitter) will go up in flames lol.

I'm highly concerned that it will be the Kings 10 and Pelicans 9, giving us a ~9 percent chance of losing the pick, the way both teams are going. We have an easy schedule and aren't tanking to the utmost yet, and only 2 games back. Pelicans have a rough schedule, and may lose out or win only one

Where is that math coming from? One of the 11-14 teams winning a top 3 spot is really 9%? That is surprising to me but I don't see how Kings beat either Rockets or Clippers, nor how Pels lose out. But we'll see

Edit - checked the math - damn. Go Pels. Go L.... nah I can't say it. Just go Pels!

NO spanked by Denver who is fighting for that 8th seed. At least Detroit won.
Minnesota is the best team in the business at losing by a couple points. That's an art.

This may be true, but regardless, the result is damaging - they lose their pick, and its a sad day for the organization....they've gone 7-12 or so since Cousins departure. Ridiculous that they couldn't manage a couple more losses - pathetic even - T-Wolves/Mavericks wins were the apex of this. And if they get #11, one doesn't have to look any farther than those B2B wins as to why they Kings only pick once. No excuses.

New York is... well, they're actually in worse shape than us. Phil Jackson giving Melo the MJ=>Kwame treatment this year has basically broken both guy's chances of helping that organization to rebuild and now what have they got left? Phil went all in on broken players (Rose, Noah) then doubled down by breaking Melo's desire to play for him and when the dust clears all they'll have left is Porzingis and a blank slate around him. I actually kindof liked Melo throughout his career even though he's damn lazy as a defender and an incurable ballhog. When he got in a zone there's no one in the league that could put up points faster. I've seen it in person and it's a marvel to behold. Point is, that team has been leveled to the foundation this year so it's not like they're under-performing to pad their roster with a better player at our expense. They're just plain bad.

Agreed about Minnesota though. Those greedy bastards got a once in a decade bigman, a bouncy 22 year old wingman who could probably put up 20 points in his sleep, the best PG prospect in last year's draft at 5th overall, another super-talented 22 year old combo guard, and a skilled veteran lead guard running the show and they still might pick ahead of us in this draft? Again?! C'mon man!

I still think McLemore deserves the honor. He's earned it. Been here for four years, worked hard, nice guy. Give him the ball and let him go to work!:)
I really want the Kings to lose these last 3 - anything to help try make it into #7.....really hoping on them drafting Smith Jr as their #1 prospect available.
McClemore just has never solved his handles problem - which is a big problem for him, yes perfect for PG. A Suns win would likely mean losing having the option of Smith. Perhaps the Twolves would trade #7 for #8 and one of the 2nd rounders?

To be fair Paps looks pretty solid. We were all agonizing over drafting Valentine or Baldwin and both look very mediocre.

Cousins/Davis have been out, and may not return for their final three road games. Affording us only one win of the remaining three to avoid that 9% if they do lose out
