Buddy Hield

It's odd, I thought Grant and Jerry were really underselling Buddy when he got here. On the flipside they exploded every time Skal jumped more than 3 inches off the ground.

Their love affair with the Greek Freak was a "freaking embarrassment," to borrow a phrase from Grant.
This was one of several points made in the Kings Broadcast Team thread and a big reason fans of others teams like the Kings duo so much compared to others. They often overdue it when it comes to the Kings nightly opponents.

I'm pretty convinced he's the real deal and will be a top SG. If he wasn't coming off a so-so stint in NO and basically being the return for Boogie...not just Kings fans but the league would be going crazy over him. It seems people are approaching his progress as cautiously as Skal and Papa..but he's clearly a special offensive player.

He's the exact guy I always wanted...alongside Cousins.

He really is making nice strides. He does tend to disappear completely from the offense for long stretches and I would like to see him get more shots.

Dude is legit.. I really enjoy watching him, he's playin crazy for a rookie. I'm curious what his potential is..? 20 ppg? 25 ppg? That stroke is feathery.....

As a scorer, he's sorta in that CJ McCollum mold. Not the most athletic guy but by no means slow footed. Can shoot from anywhere and has developed a game off the dribble as the season's gone on. Has played solid team defense over the last two wins as well though you'll never confuse him for Ron Artest on that end. If he ends up as a CJ-esque 20 point a night guy who at least tries on defense, it's gravy.

He was my numero uno choice last draft, and so I was pleasantly surprised when he got in the trade. He needs to work on his defense a good amount.
He reminds me an awful lot of (Captain) Stephen Jackson. Totally fearless with shooting.

Buddy is quite a bit more atheletic than CJ Mccollum, he also has a bit more size than him. Buddy reminds me more of Harden, very patient and probing big body but looking to be more incontrol

That fade away is a nice second weapon for him and he has been using it a bit more. Next step is to be able to score at the basket and or make a nice setup pass. If he can do that and work on his defense, we have ourselves a long term starter at the 2.

Very interested to see how Buddy vs Jamal Murray plays out over time. I've been wrong about Buddy before, I thought he made the wrong move returning for his senior year, and that he'd be a fringe 1st rd pick/early 2nd sorta like Allen Crabbe. LOL.

I never questioned Buddy being a bit older because I don't think a lot of these Caribbean players start playing basketball as young.

Maybe basketball has caught on but I remember reading that Tim Duncan was a swimmer until a hurricane destroyed the pool when he was a teenager.

I love this block on Murray.

He's old tho for a 2016 draftpick. Lemme put it this way, if he was an international player he'd have been automatically eligible for the 2015 draft, being born in 1993. Instead he was able to circumvent that rule by going to college.. the age restriction rules are dumb though(especially the one-and-done part)...

Thats one of the reasons the comparison with him and Jamal Murray will be an interesting one to watch, there's a considerable age difference. They're different positionally too, Buddy's much more of a pure 2.

He's got a great game though, was a really nice pickup for the Kings, I love that they have the rights to Isaiah Cousins as well, thoroughly enjoyed watching that team in college, and I still do they have a sneaky good crew there this year(Kameron McGusty is a player sure to blow up this year, prototypical SG build), few pro prospects for sure and Kreuger's a great coach, one of the best... I also root for OU football so there's that.

I wonder if anyone has done a rigorous study on the success/failure of NBA players and the number of years they spent in college? It would be interesting to know if the current bias for teens with only one year of college has resulted in improved outcomes, or have they just managed to expand the pool of prospective draftees? (sort of like overfishing your favorite pond)

I felt that with Cousins, if he was going to stay at the PG position, it would take him a year or two in the D-League to polish his skills. He only played the pt one year, and that's because they wanted to get both him and Buddy on the floor together. People forget that Cousins shot the ball really well at Oklahoma. Just didn't put up the volume of shots that Buddy did. But I remember him hitting some game winners.

I'm hoping I. Cousins has a little Dennis Johnson in him. They have a lot in common, similar size, SG turned PG and they play in a similar way. Dennis was on some really good teams. Lets hope the Kings and Cousins have a little of that success. Here is a little bit of the Wiki on Dennis:

"A prototypical late bloomer, Johnson overcame early struggles[2] and had a successful NBA playing career. Drafted 29th overall in 1976 by the Seattle SuperSonics, Johnson began his professional career as a shooting guard. He eventually led the Sonics to their only NBA championship in 1979, winning the Finals MVP Award. After a short stint with the Phoenix Suns, he became the starting point guard for the Boston Celtics, with whom he won two more championships. Johnson was voted into five All-Star Teams, one All-NBA First and one Second Team, and nine consecutive All-Defensive First and Second Teams.[3] Apart from his reputation as a defensive stopper, Johnson was known as a clutch player who made several decisive plays in NBA playoffs history."

Here is the same on Cousins:

"A native of Mount Vernon, New York, Cousins was only a two-star prospect out of high school.[2] Cousins played four seasons for Oklahoma, mostly at shooting guard and only switching to the point as a senior. As a senior, Cousins paired with Buddy Hield to lead the Sooners to the Final Four while averaging 12.6 points, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game.[3] He earned third-team All-Big 12 honors.

On June 23, 2016, Cousins was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 59th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft[5] and later joined them for the 2016 NBA Summer League.[6] On September 6, he signed with the Kings,[7] but was waived on October 24 after appearing in two preseason games.[8] Seven days later, he was acquired by the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League as an affiliate player of the Kings."

I think we have something in I. Cousins that's flying under the radar around these parts. I agree he needs that D- League experience to sharpen up his skills at the next level but I think he's going to make this team and be a good player. Isaac at #5 is a real possibility even with Fox there because Wings are so important to teams these days. Then we could pick up Ntilikina or Smith at #10 and we could really have something.

I like Issac at #5. There's a good chance we're picking between Isaac and Fox at #5 in which case I think Fox is the choice. But Isaac looks really good too... Isaac and Ntilikina would be a nice haul.

Isaiah really turned it on at the end of the year. Last 10 games or so he really got going. Was averaging over 20 points a game on good overall shooting from the floor but still didn't shoot the way he shot in college from beyond the arc. Probably averaged close to 8 rebounds a game with a bunch of steals. He's assist totals were pretty pedestrian but he definitely projects to be a backup guy at best. 4 years in college and still developing in the D league...he's most likely not going to turn into a needle mover but he can definitely carve out a Tony Douglas type career if he continues that production this year.
