Trade one of our picks?

Should we trade one of our picks for Marcus Smart?

How about trading one of our first round picks for Marcus Smart? It was give us a young PG with strong defensive skills. It would give Boston a shot at a superstar.

It would be great to have both Smart and Temple for some D minded guards. We have not had that in years. DJ may love it.

The thought intrigues me.

Boston has Brooklyn's pick this year, they will have a pick in the top 4 and they are competing in the East. I don't see them as the target for this kind of trade. I do think at least one of the picks should be available in trade and PG is our biggest need IMO so I'm not opposed to the idea.

I'm the wrong person to ask as I love this draft and have never liked Marcus Smart's game going back to college.

That said, even though there are 11 guys I really like in this draft, odds are that some will be busts. So there is definitely some value to the idea of trading one of the picks for a known quantity.

I guess it depends on what prospects are still on the board when the Kings pick and what offers are out there.

But for Smart? I wouldn't be in favor of it.

Marcus Smart is definitely not worth a top 14 pick in this years draft. His trade value would be closer to our high 2nd round pick, but not our 1st round picks.

Definitely better to keep our picks and take BPA.

A lot higher chance of hitting the jackpot with one of the top 10 players in this years draft.

Even if Boston WOULD do this, I don't see it. A top 10 pick will bring back a very good young cheap PG for 3 years and I am not that high on Smart anyway. Normally I am all about trading picks and get in beefs every season about why we SHOULD trade them as I am fairly risk adverse, but this year is different. We need stars and guys who can/will play in Jeoger's system. We can't get stars for 5-10 level picks but we MIGHT find one with them. We also have no hope of landing a star in Free agency so that leaves with a cupboard full of young prospects, picks and cap space. The way I see it all that is left to us is prospect for star level talent and use cap-space on vet mentors and role players while we develop the prospects and hope one or two turn out to be stars and the rest develop into solid role players. So for the first time decades I not only support keeping our picks but also buying/trading for more; dig as many holes looking for gold as you can. Of course if you can convince a team to let us trade up, well that is a different story.

Sure, trade one of our picks IF we have more than one AND we get a heeded, quality player. Smart? I have no idea. Leave it to Vlade and crew.

If we go with a SF, say Isaac with our pick, and all the promising PG prospects are off the board with the NO pick, then I'm fine with a trade. I'm not sure what to think of Smart. I thought he would be a stud coming out of college but I get too many conflicting opinions on him now. Rozier on the other hand.

Not in this draft. This team is at least 2 years away from doing anything, and next year is going to be an all out youth movement.

I would be open to moving this year's early 2nd for a 1st round pick in 2018 or 2019. Maybe use Koufos to get there.

Err? Marcus Smart for a 2nd rounder?

Smart is heads and shoulders above Rozier. Way better playmaker, way better defender, about equal in the rebounding area, but not that good of a jumpshooter. Roziers problem is, that he simply isn't a PG. He is a great athlete and he uses his athleticism to get some boards and to play solid D, but he can't run a team to save his life.

Marcus Smart would have made sense, when Boogie was still here, because he would have made a difference on defense and his offensive shortcomings would be overshadowed, when surrounded by Boogie and 3 additonal jumpshooters like Temple, Tolliver/Skal and Barnes/Afflalo/Malachi.
Now with 2 bigs, who are basically rim runners and lob targets (maybe Papa can actually do more on offense, but that's up in the air right now) and one big, who looks like a prototypical pick&pop/roll finisher, you basically want a PG more from the Steph Curry, Damian Lillard mold. A guy with a jumpshot off the dribble, who has a great understanding of the pick&roll. If our bigs pan out on D, we would be even able to mask a PG with questionable defense a bit.
YOu know, who would make a whole lot of sense now? Seth Curry.........once again the Kings were able to plan ahead right?.....

Well I can see I am definitely in the minority with this idea. LOL.

However, I remain intrigued with the idea, especially given that we likely have 2 high draft picks. Much of intrigue has to do with age. This draft has many really good PGs, but they are all quite young. We are talking about drafting a 19 y.o. to learn the most difficult position. It will honestly probably take at least 3 years before they are ready to lead the team. Smart is now 23 with 2 years of NBA experience. He is about to enter his PG prime and he is much more of a known quantity. We have seen how he is able to compete against NBA level competition. The guys entering the draft always look great when playing against college level talent. You never really know for sure how they are going to look against the beasts of the NBA. Most of all, we know that Smart can lock down on defense which is highly valued in my book given that offenses are now much more guard driven.

I am not sure why the Kings would do this.

The Kings are right at the beginning of the full blown rebuild. They have a couple of nice young pieces on the roster but this team is in the need of young players and draft picks. Now Smart is by no means old but he has been in the league for 3 years now and has not progressed to the level of player that a rebuilding team must absolutely have. If you are a play off-team looking for some grit and defense on the perimeter then you make this move.

But for a team that will need to go to the draft for a few more years then this move does not make much sense. Kings need to draft their franchise guys before they start thinking about trading their picks, unless they are trading the picks for a franchise guy.

ALL of the young PGs being talked about in this draft class have a ceiling that blows Smart's out of the water. Whether they reach it or not is another matter entirely. This is cutting corners on your rebuild and I know I'm not enamored with the idea of Smart as our PG of the future.

If the Pelicans pick falls out of the Top 11 or so then I'd be more open to considering it.

The reason I voted "depends on where the pick is" is because if we somehow end up giving our first round pick Chicago and having a second round draft choice, I would like to trade the second rounder for Marcus Smart :D

We would be lucky to have a tough defense minded player like Smart. Sure the stats don't look fancy but if you actually watch him play he is often closing games getting key defense stops, deflecting passes, grabbing rebounds etc Definitely just an overall pest that is in their mixing it up with anyone. They love him in Boston and Stevens is on record saying Smart is a winning player.

That said he isn't worth the 1st rd. pick pre-selection as that is the point in time the pick has its most value, and maybe Boston does not want to let a guy like Smart go, its one of those trades that does not make sense for either team.

Also if Im Vivek I'm not letting Vlade anywhere near a trade with that first round pick involved, thats all we have left to show for Cuz and could land us a major young piece.

This trade can't happen before they lottery as the deadline has passed.

If the Kings somehow end up picking 2nd or 3rd, very unlikely as that would require both the Kings and 76ers to move up, the Kings say no.

If the Kings are picking around 6 and 10, where they would today. The Celtics say no to even the 6th pick. The Celtics are an interesting team. They are among the Eastern Conferences best teams now, but are also developing a second wave that won't crest for a few years comprised of whoever they pick this year, Brown and Smart, who they value a great deal. They like Smart's upside, but he doesn't have to be a star for the team now or later, and serves both timelines.

Plus, this is a point guard heavy draft and the Celtics already have a good point guard on an amazing contract ... so they probably don't need to draft they best point guard left on the board at 6 or 7.

The Kings own Philly's 2nd round pick for this coming draft. I would trade that for Smart. That said I don't think Ainge would do that. No matter, the Kings can just take BPA and hope to hit on another player like Skal.
