[Mar/Apr] General Kings Talk

#1
We have very specific threads now. Just thought we needed a general discussion thread.

I would really like to see the following combo get some semi significant minutes that last 5 games of the year or so.

PG: TY or Darren
SG: Buddy
SF: Malachi
PF: Skal
C: Willie

I think that is a fun, young, athletic good shooting lineup that could be at least 4/5 of our core moving forward.

We all want to see more youth but at the same time, we have to trust Joerger and his ability to bring along his young players smoothly rather than throwing them to the wolves right away. It's definitely not ideal from a fans perspective but it might be better for them in the long run. Even if Vlade is a useless GM and drafter, the one hope I have in turning his draft picks into something respectable is Joerger's ability to develop his players. So long as he is here of course.

Honestly, Joerger is the hope. There are no future all-star types on the roster. He's going to get stuck with a very young team next year. Really young teams, while it seems like a good plan, are not necessarily a great idea as they tend to lose...a lot....see TWolves. The hope is with Joerger.

I think the most important of many goals we have for the players and the team is to teach them to win as a team. I have the utmost confidence n Joerger to handle all aspects of team and player development. So leave minutes, starters, rookies' development, lave them all in Joerger's good hands.

Of course I'd love to see the young guys play, love to see good team play, love to see wins, love to see us get two high draft picks BUT I'd rather see Joerger develop a winning attitude n our team and players, vets and rookies alike.

I happen to think that Skal and Buddy can both become all star level type players in the future.

Buddy has a very quick release and great form on his shot and can he score with the outside shot or mid range floaters. He just needs to work on his handles, so he can finish at the rim better. I can definitely see him averaging 20 ppg in the future.

Skal has already proven he knows how to box out and rebound. He also has his mid-range shot going. Once he puts on some more muscle, he will be able to bang with the big boys better. He has ultra quick reflexes and major athleticism, that you don't see very often in 7 footers. He can very well develop into a 16-18 ppg, 8-10 reb, 1.5 blk per game player

What hope is Joerger? How has he impressed this year? He's been subpar record wise, and that's the only definitive measure. Now I do t trust him with the franchises long term viability

Buddy/Skal can be good.

I think that's a myopic vision. Not everything can be measured. It's tough to assess a coach when he's still in the first year of his contract with a team in flux and a lot of unanswered questions. He's impressed me with his determination, his passion, his ability to get along with the players AND management, his approach towards properly developing the youth, etc.

I think the main "culture" change was that you could see the team playing hard every night for him. There was really no quit in this team.

The thing that really sucks is, IF DMC wasn't traded, I really think this team would have made the playoffs this year. :(

uhh what? Joerger has been pretty amazing this year. He's gotten one of the least talented rosters in the NBA (with Boogie) competing every night and taking virtually everyone down to the wire. And now, he's getting by FAR the least talented roster playing hard and at least giving good effort on both ends. His strength is getting the most out of his players and he's done a phenomenal job at doing so this year.

For all the bad Vlade has done, stealing Joerger from Memphis was an absolutely brilliant move. I completely trust him and his system to get us rolling once he gets real talent on the team.

These guys play hard every night, the young guys are seemingly developing, he inherited a new roster that was ill-fitting and the FO dumps the best player and the second best player was injured early and now he's basically changing the team mid-stream from a HC O that sometimes runs to a guard oriented team that runs as much as it cans. Joerger is a damn good coach. Too bad you can't see it.

Take a look at who makes the all-star teams.....you saying that Buddy can be that good? I think it is a stretch at best and wishful thinking. Skal has nice skills but at this point, I think it's safer to say he is not an all-star caliber type guy in the future. But he does have an intriguing skill set

Come to think of it, in regards to Hield, I'm not so sure he's going to be better than Malachi. That is a legitimate question.

I'm not sure I see the vast talent difference compared to last year, where Karl was on a better pace, and that's a low measure

Agreed. While I would value Hield higher, Malachi's one college season wasn't appreciably worse than Hield's soph and jr seasons. I don't necessarily believe Malachi will be better, but he is younger and has the physical tools.

I am not saying he will definitely be an All-star, but you said "all-star type" player. Someone like CJ McCollum is an "all star type" player, but may never be an all-star. I see no reason why Buddy can't get to a CJ McCollum type level (i.e. 20 ppg) player.

The thing about Buddy is that you can see he has the scorer mentality. He is confident in his shot and is aggressive. He is not afraid to let it fly and he shots a good percentage. He just needs a little space to get his shot off and he has a very quick release. Those things are inherent in him.

Like I have said in the past, no one can predict the future, but both Skal and Buddy has already shown NBA level talent that they can build on, some guys never show that talent.

I agree with just about everything here. Especially on Buddy and the genuine question of will he even be better than Richardson.

On Skal, a lot of water needs to go under the bridge but the kid has some genuine talent and NBA game. There are still questions such as can he develop his body to play 36 minutes at PF and bang with the big boys? How does he respond to a closer defensive attention when teams start scouting him a lot more? Will he extend that jumper to beyond 3 pt line? Can he becomes a good defender? All the question that are still valid but at least the signs are there that he maybe could one day be a borderline all-star. Maybe!

By all means, let's see this group play some real minutes together when Malachi returns. Hopefully Malachi's defense as the small forward won't be the weak link in the chain. I'd also like to see Papa get some minutes as the season winds down. I have no illusions about Papa being much of a contributor next year, but at least he's progressing and didn't stink it up in Reno. Some NBA minutes toward the end of the season may be good for his confidence and continued development.

I'm not with the bringing them along philosophy, and think it's a crutch for Joerger to continue to go balls out on a lost season

I'd like Buddy/Skal etc starting, and Papa playing

All other rebuilding teams don't employ bringing them on slowly, they just play their young players

One thing I've noticed about this team thus far is that they stink on the second night of back-to-backs. I would assume that the general school of thought is that young teams would fair better because they have more energy, but I think this team really needs the day off to clean up mistakes from the previous game. They do seem especially sloppy without practice time and I think we'll continue to see that throughout the rest of the season and probably into next season as well.

It'll take awhile to work out an offense with 5 SGs. :)

Regarding WCS's rebounding... Has there been a big who came into the league as a poor rebounder and eventually got better? Rebounding is generally an effort/instincts skill. Aside from getting stronger to hold position, it seems like you either have it or you don't.

effort and boxing out are the two key factors and he does neither. He would rather expend his energy on the offensive side of the ball, shooting jumpers, floaters and catching lobs.
