Omri makes dumb mistakes.

That being said, Barnes makes just as many dumb mistakes and brings a lot less to the table.

I'd love to see Omri get more minutes. But it doesn't seem like Joerger is a fan, for whatever reason.

Barnes is the guy Joerger trusts to establish the hard nosed, defensive culture he thinks we need in order to be successful. So in the end Barnes is allowed to make more mistakes than some other guys.
One thing Joerger has achieved so far is to Limit out of control plays and turnovers, which is crucial when you want to win featuring a bulky big man in todays Nba, which mainly is about transition basket and 3's.
Now Casspi is not always under control and therefore isnt a Joerger favourite.

On one hand. The team is just not built correctly. There're 2 SG/SF players (McLemore and Afflalo), 4 SF/PF (Gay, Casspi, Barnes, Tolliver) and add to the mix SG Temple and centers Koufos and Cauley-Stein (with them Cousins is playing PF)... All of them have their own reasons and claims for minutes... so there's no chance every wing or forward who can be in most NBA teams rotation (or can cast as youngster with upside) will get playing time.

At the same time, while overflown with somehow "rotational level" players (add here Collison and Lawson) the team has one star playes (Cousins) and just one another really starter level player (Gay - and there're never ending talks that he's not good match for the team anyway).

It's also quite clear that the plan before the season was to trade Gay along with some other player/s for somebody more suitable which would be starter (hopefully star) on PG or maybe C/PF position. The trade didn't happen and Kings are stuck with half-done roster...

Still, on other hand... It's just crazy that Casspi is paying most of the price. He had really good season last year. He's still in his prime and wanted to stay in Sacramento... He's very versatile player and one of most effective role-players (e.g. non-star) scorers in NBA. He actually tried hard to accomodate the new coach requirements - you can see that he worked on improving D, and his turnover "problem" was unexistent since he was re-inserted to the rotation (~0.6 turnover per game). Still once he was out for 4 games because of illness - he was once again moved to the "fringe" part of rotation, and then out of it completely.

While I still want Kings to succeed and will continue to follow (and maybe they'll get another Israeli NT player in TJ Leaf next year, who knows?) now as Israeli NT fan I can only hope Casspi will be traded as soon as possible.

Omri may well have given up on this season by being unavailable the entire time his biggest opportunity presented itself (when Rudy was out).

I still do not understand how Omri could have had an undisclosed illness for that long and not display any symptoms and be sitting right next to his teammates.

Look, I'm quite OK with your statement based on the eye test,
but statistically, Casspi and Barnes are not equally TO-prone...

Omri is actually ranked #4 on the team in LEAST turnovers per possesion (!)
Matt is #9 (or 4th worst)

TOs per 100 possessions:

If you prefer Advanced Stats, then Barnes has a TOV% of 13.4% - worst in our team (See HERE).

(No ill intentions... I like Matt's heart!)

Hey, don't get me wrong! I'll take Omri over Barnes every day of the week, and twice on Shabbat!

Just trying to justify why Joerger likes Barnes.

Hopefully he gets more burn soon.

Casspi is a better player than Barnes. Period. He was better last year, and he's been better this year once again. He should be getting Barnes' minutes, and Barnes should be getting DNP-CDs. There's really no argument for Barnes at this point.

His advanced impact stats have been better both years:

2015-16
RAPM:
Casspi = +1.39
Barnes = -3.40

ORAPM:
Casspi = +1.07
Barnes = -1.58

DRAPM:
Casspi = +0.32
Barnes: = -1.81

RPM:
Casspi = +0.96
Barnes = -1.39

ORPM:
Casspi = +0.34
Barnes = -0.45

DRPM:
Casspi = +0.62
Barnes = -1.39

Net On/Off:

Casspi = +6.1
Barnes = -5.4

Off On/Off:
Casspi = +3.1
Barnes = -1.5

Def On/Off:
Casspi = -2.9
Barnes = +3.9

Literally, every single one of those impact stats in 2015-16 (whether it's offensive or defensive) favors Casspi. Now let's look at the 2016-17 season.

2016-17
RPM:
Casspi = -1.70
Barnes = -2.42

ORPM:

Casspi = -1.81
Barnes = -1.15

DRPM:
Casspi = +0.11
Barnes = -1.27

Net On/Off:

Casspi = +2.3
Barnes = -6.1

Off On/Off:
Casspi = -0.9
Barnes = -1.3

Def On/Off:
Casspi = -3.2
Barnes = +4.9

The only thing that favors Barnes here is ORPM. However, overall RPM is in favor of Casspi. Still nothing here suggesting that Barnes should be playing over Casspi.

What about just some simple stats over the last 2 years?

2015-16
Casspi (per100): .587 TS% / .481 FG% / .409 3PT% / .648 FT% / 20.8 PPG / 10.5 RPG / 2.4 APG / 1.4 SPG / 0.4 BPG / 2.4 TOPG / 3.9 FPG
Barnes (per100): .503 TS% / .381 FG% / .322 3PT% / .804 FT% / 17.8 PPG / 9.9 RPG / 3.8 APG / 1.8 SPG / 1.3 BPG / 2.8 TOPG / 5.5 FPG

2016-17
Casspi (per100): .510 TS% / .451 FG% / .379 3PT% / .588 FT% / 16.8 PPG / 10.8 RPG / 3.4 APG / 1.2 SPG / 0.1 BPG / 2.3 TOPG / 2.9 FPG
Barnes (per100): .491 TS% / .374 FG% / .328 3PT% / .681 FT% / 14.6 PPG / 9.4 RPG / 5.6 APG / 1.4 SPG / 0.7 BPG / 3.2 TOPG / 4.6 FPG

So Casspi is a better & more efficient scorer, better shooter, better rebounder, less turnover prone, and less foul prone while Barnes is a better free throw shooter, passer, & generates more steals & blocks. Despite Barnes having better steal & block numbers, advanced impact stats still show that Casspi helps his team defensively way more than Barnes does whether it's DRAPM, DRPM, or Defensive On/Off.

What about measurements? How do they compare in size?

Height Without Shoes:
Casspi = 6' 7.75"
Barnes = 6' 6.75"

Winspan:
Casspi = 6' 9.25"
Barnes = 6' 9"

Standing Reach:
Casspi = 8' 10.5"
Barnes = 8' 0.5" (Yikes!!!)

Weight:
Casspi = 225 lbs
Barnes = 225 lbs

So Joerger is benching someone who is taller, longer, a better scorer, a more efficient scorer, a better shooter, a better rebounder, a better defender, less turnover prone, & less foul prone over Barnes. Riddle me that?

Bench Rudy and he becomes 99% untradable.
For all we know, the Kings can pull a Atlanta on us all and withdraw him from trade rumors due to the fact that they can't get anything in return and be hopeful that in the offseason, a sign and trade can be worked out instead.

I don't doubt for a second Casspi is a better player than Barnes. But one of them is Joerger's guy, bringing all this imaginary veteran goodness, while the other isn't.
While I think the difference is clear enough to play one more than the other, Casspi hasn't exactly made a case for himself so far.

I think Barnes is playing more because Coach Joerger asked Vlade to sign him. He played well in Memphis after he was traded there last year and they developed a rapport and now Joerger is coaching a new group of players in a new city and its helpful to have someone you already know and trust come with you. Omri didn't play his way out of the rotation, he just wasn't given much of a chance. There's always a casualty or two whenever there's a coaching change. Darren hasn't been playing well this year either and he was one of our most consistent players the previous 2 years. I really like Omri and I'd prefer that he stay but the current brain trust doesn't appear to have put much value on his contributions so it's probably better if we trade him. If we're not playing him now I don't see why they would give him a raise to not play next year. Realistically though, role-players on small deals who aren't getting playing time don't usually get traded mid-season unless they're part of a package deal. He's a better player than Bellineli but I doubt his perceived value is as high because he doesn't have the "proven shooter" label (although he should by now).

i think this is true of joerger's preference for playing matt barnes. i also think that coaches occasionally prize certain intangibles over more striking statistical variables. matt barnes has historically brought a hard-nosed attitude and a defensive grit that a coach like dave joerger clearly values. sometimes such a player can have a trickle-down effect on his teammates' effort and intensity. that said, barnes has been so ineffective this season that it's getting very difficult to justify a vote for any intangibles he might bring over casspi's statistical superiority. yes, omri has a penchant for bone-headed play, but there have been quite a lot of barnes' errors to account for this season, too.

personally, i've always had a soft spot for matt barnes as the local boy with the tough upbringing who managed to scrape and claw his way to a lengthy and successful nba career. but now the age and the miles are showing, and at 36, he's entering the phase of his career where he should be receiving very limited minutes off the bench as a wily veteran who still has a thing or two to show the young'uns about how to rough up the opposition and get away with it. at this point, it's fairly obvious that the kings are a better team with omri casspi on the floor, especially when he's getting consistent minutes.
